End Goals

Realizing I have too many, but also that I have bought more using the same reasons I bought the earlier ones, intending to use them but have not, so the plan is to enjoy what i already have and rediscover my collection and satisfying that desire to buy more with the playing, using and enjoying the earlier ones. I also attempt to follow the rule of selling, trading, or gifting two for every new one I want to get. While that is the desired goal, it has not been easy to follow, but it has made me re-examine the ones I may get rid of and found out why I liked them in the first place……. and satiate the buying bug for a time.

I have also found out that a simple inexpensive knife still cuts and get the jobs done, even if I like the fancy and more expensive ones. My MAM, Opinel, and SA still get used often, while my GECs stay in the tube (oiled of course).

"The things you own end up owning you"

; )

So what knife did you carry for years at a time??
As a young man I carried a buck stockman style 3 blade black scaled one until I left it on a fishing boat in Florida and replaced it with a slightly smaller 3 bladed wooden scale one (still have that one). The wooden one got somewhat worn down over time from change and keys in my pocket with it. Not sure of the proper names or numbers. I bought my first “expensive” knife around 1990. $100 Benchmade tanto. That was a chunk of change for me back then.

Lately, I've been reflecting on my personal journey with knives and have come to the realization that my fascination with them is bound to endure throughout my life. The allure of knives consistently captivates me, and I can envision myself gradually expanding my collection over time. These knives have become an integral part of both my work and personal life, and I genuinely enjoy using them in various contexts.

Although I find contentment in my current assortment, my primary focus lies in savoring the sheer delight that this hobby brings me. I am genuinely curious to hear about your own aspirations and ambitions when it comes to knives and building a collection. Have you already achieved the goals you set out to accomplish, enabling you to relish the present state of affairs, or are you still actively pursuing specific objectives?

Life is short. Enjoy.

As I approach retirement (now 64) in the next few years and looking at an abundance of fine knives I find myself trying to live with what I have. That said the Shiney Sharp Object syndrome kicks in from time to time and I find something fun arriving in the mail (new Shiro Hation arriving today). Got a 5-7 years before I retire so I do need to start showing more restraint but life is short and knives are nice. Been carrying one daily since I was 8 and plan to have a couple buried with me, just in case:cool: .

My end goal is to find a blade I'll use to baton the planet in half and then declare myself as Supreme Leader of Bushcraft.

All jokes aside, my goal is to find what I like and use that.

First lesson is - the knife is more than just a steel and heat treat.
Knife is:
Steel
Heat treat
Construction (full tang, partial tang or rat tail and so on)
Blade shape
Blade thickness
Edge geometry
Grind lines (no sharp corners)
The handle (ergonomics)
Sheath for fixed blades
Lock for folders

So yeah, it's not easy to find all that to your specs.

I've pretty much reached the end of my knife journey. The David Boye folders I picked up a while back really killed my interest in any other modern knife designs. They are everything I want and need, and nothing I don't. No stupid flippers, no pointless bearings, no liners to trap crud, just a couple slabs of FRN and a completely rust proof blade. A pure cutting machine. Other than a few sentimental pieces, the only other knives I have are a Mora Garberg, a Case Copperhead, and a few SAK's. Everything else is either sold or getting ready to be sold.
I think the biggest change for me is that it's stopped being fun, and I really don't like having things just to have them. I've been paring down all my possessions lately, trying to get rid of the clutter, and living and buying more intentionally.
I too am close to thel end of my journey. I edc this David Mary David Mary custom,
I also have a custom Gyuto being ground as we speak by timos- timos- and I have Sak on the key ring In my pocket.

To anyone who thinks they don’t need any more knives, there are plenty of hobbies out there you can get involved in that require knives you don’t own yet. ;)
