End of Watch

At first I thought it was a Kershaw Offset, but it had an assisted opening blade so it wasn't an Offset, but then maybe I thought it could be a Kershaw Clash, but alas no spring loaded glass breaker! So I wondered what it was, then I realized that it looked a lot like my S&W Tactical so I started looking at S&W knives and it turned out to be a spot on match to the S&W SW911B First Responder model. S&W knives are more economical than your custom or high end tactical knives, but thus far I haven't had any fail on me and they get the job done so I can only say that they are decent for the price!

The thing is, for the price of most S&W knives, you could get something from Kershaw or Byrd, with better steel and materials. Don't get me wrong, they have some nice looking ones, and they can be fun to play around with(I own a couple myself), but if you're looking for functionality you can do better, even at their price point.

PropThePolecat,

I'm going to take you up on your offer for help that you offered ralphjuden. I am really interested in the options that the S&W 911B offers; mainly the assisted window punch. I am wondering if there are any other knives out there with this feature since I am aware of S&W's reputation. I am not crazy about the jagged blade either and a seat belt cutter would be optimal for my line of work. Thank you.

Hi Devroy and welcome to Bladeforums. You do not mention, what you will be using the knife for...duty carry, edc, etc.?

I do not know of any other knives with a assisted window punch. But i know for a fact, that knives with a fixed carbide windw breaker work just as well. A light tap and the window shatters. Its important though, that the glass breaker is made of carbide and not of steel. Benchmade, Spyderco, Microtech, Zero Tolerance all make carbide glass breakers. DPX for example has a stainless glass breaker, which will flatten after a couple of times, as glass is harder than steel.

I like the Benchmade Triage 915. Its well built and everything about it is quality. Its got a N680 stainless blade which is extremely rust resistant and takes a very keen edge. The scales are G-10, a bit coarse, but they provide excellent grip. The axis-lock is tough and ambidextrous. The rescue hook is 440C and if theres something Benchmade know how to make, its a rescue hook.

Heres a video with the 916. Its the same knife as the 915, but this one has a blunt tip.

Another knife with a built-in rescue hook is the Gerber Hindere Rescue. I have not handled the knife, but it seems well-designed. There are many reviews on YouTube. Its cheaper than the Benchmade, but it uses a low-grade stainless. Easy to sharpen, but it loses its edge just as quickly.

I also carry the Benchmade Contego 810 coupled with a Benchmade Rescue Hook 7. Carrying a separate rescue hook offers a bit more freedom when choosing a knife with a carbide glass breaker. For example, you could go with the Zero Tolerance 360 or Spyderco Rescue combined with a rescue hook from Benchmade.

Something entirely else to consider, is the Leatherman Z-Rex. Its a full-size rescue hook with a carbide glass breaker. If you carry one of those, then youve got the glass breaker and hook in one package. That allows you to carry any knife of your choosing.

But if you insist on carrying everything in one package, then in my opinion the Triage is the way to go.

I just watched it on Netflix a few days ago. I guess all of us knife nuts noticed right away that the knife wasn't a Spyderco.
I thought it was odd that they wanted to use the Spyderco name, but thats Hollywood for you.

I thought the movie was very good. It reminded me of one of my favorite shows, Southland.

PropThePolecat,
I appreciate all of the information. I was actually looking at the 916 for a while, but was blinded by the assisted window punch on the 911B. The functionality of the 916 is far superior to the 911B. The rust-resistant blade, rescue hook and axis lock are my favorite features as most go to hell within a couple uses; the prying ability is untouchable and I can wait to try it out. I carry on duty in all of my capacities of public safety; whether it be LE, EMS or Fire and it seems the functionality of the 916 is just what I have been looking for. Much appreciated!

Excellent choice! Let us all know, what you think of it once you get it.
