Endura 4 ffg question regarding Blade Play?

I ve had 6 Enduras. One had a small amount of back and forth blade play out of the box, but is seems to a disappeared after a short period of use. Did the lock back get seated? One had no play oob , but developed some minimal intermittent play after a lot of use. The other four have always locked up completely tight. My Native and my Sage 4 also lock up completely tight. In my experience Spyderco doesn t seem to have inherent blade play in their lock backs. If I believed that, I wouldn t buy the the lock backs. Almost all side to side looseness can be corrected with adjustment of the pivot screw.

I must admit I am a little curious why 3 different guys in this thread each have had 6 enduras. Lucky number six I guess. :D

Glad to see someone is thinking...should have been the first response to the OP, instead of the antagonistic posts that came first.

It does give pause; I'm thinking more like veracity deficit.

I had 2 Endura 4 over the years and neither seemed to have play. Could be the OP is more sensitive to it.
I used to obsess over slight play. Found it in multiple blade types, different lock types and manufacturers. I found it was easier for me to stop worrying about it than to find one that passes the "Seinfeld" level of approval.

You should have turned up sooner before all the "not thinking" and "not telling the truth" started! Thank Scagel you are here now!

Ok last night I checked 3 Spyderco Salts and 1 Stretch and they all had a very small amount... nothing that I would say affects performance whatsoever.

I was first to reply, and I mentioned that they are EASILY adjustable. Not sure how my reply was antagonistic?? But OK.

Sorry about that...my Evelyn Wood's speed reading course is still stuck in my head, and in the flurry of negativity, I missed your positive message.

A tiny bit of up/down play in a lockback is normal for the design, I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it becomes an actual hindrance. Regarding side/side play, get yourself a Torx screwdriver set from the hardware store, shouldn't be more than ~$7. Adjust the screws, especially the pivot, until you achieve your desired result. You might have to choose between blade play and a stiff action, but at least you'll know how to do so in the future.

I own many Endura's, hundreds of lock backs and see no greater problem with the Endura as it relates to lock back knives in general. Imo any lock back is a potential problem, why ? Because I can't check the lock up or the Dedent so to speak on the blade. Thus while I'm lead to think the lock back may not be affected by up and down blade play, I will not carry that knife for use. I can now say I have personally checked 20 plus Enduras in the last 5 mins. and found zero to have negative play in any direction. I also checked several Goddards, and 5 Natives all also Lock Backs and noted zero blade movement.

What surprised me less and is far more predictable is the constant, antagonistic, unwelcome barbs, thrown at members. General Forum allows members to Discuss, not Debate. All should be allowed any question they wish answered, honestly and openly. Other forum styles get dragged here, dumped here and Members like Alnamvet68 and spketch are made fun of by Bullies. I will say this for sure, Spydercos hold extreme value, if you are unhappy, you can most likely get a full return on your investment any day. Op, you are welcome to post as often as you wish, and Steve, aka spketch, you are many times the person who does not follow the rules, you sir are a gentleman. Those tired of the constant harassment within General Discussion, Tap on the post # noted at top right corner of the offending post, then tap on the lower left triangle ^! sign. When the report appears, "copy" the link, sign your name and enter. There is zero reason we can not discuss knives, and knife related issues without being ourselves or watching others bullied. It is not acceptable. That is not what this forum is about. It is a large reason many great members and Mfg/Makers do not post on this site. thanks. And rest knowing Steve Ketchen is as good a man, as you will ever meet, period.

I'm experiencing a ton of side-to-side play on my endura 4. I'm going to send it in to Spyderco to get fixed. I've tightened all the screws but after a day they loosen up again. I'm sure nothing is stripped either because I've been really careful with that. I'm not happy with the endura.

You may need to put a drop of threadlocker (like Loctite Blue 242) on the pivot screw threads. Or, get some thread seal tape (PFTE tape), and wrap the threads of the pivot screw 3-4 times before putting it back together. Either should keep the pivot from slipping. If using a threadlocker be sure to follow the instructions on the package (namely giving it appropriate time to cure).

Agreed. You don't need to send it in. You need blue thread locker.
