Endura 4 Lock Movement

Hello. I've had an Endura 4 for a while now and was wondering about the movement of the blade/locking bar. When I go to cut something fairly sturdy, the top of the locking bar that touches the blade moves up. Seems normal for this kind of lock simply because of the design, but just wanted to be sure.

Thanks a bunch,
Aaron

Mine does the same thing. My Native does it much worse. Both bother me, but I have looked them over pretty thoroughly and can not determine any weakness from this. It seems like it may have something to do with the angle the lock bar and the lock bar pocket are cut. Or, as you say maybe just the design. I also have a Manix and it is quite solid overall, but even it has some slight upward movement of the lock bar when I put pressure on the blade???

This is normal for spydie lockbacks. It's a side effect of their lock geometry which Sal says is the strongest they can build.

Same here. I notice this when I test for it by putting my pinky through the hole, putting my thumb on the lock bar, then tugging. I can feel slight movement, but it's nothing serious at all.

Weird, I' ve never had any vertical play in my Spydies:confused:

If you have any backlock in your collection you have vertical play. Might only be a very small amount but its there. Nothing to be worried about, its part of what a backlock does.

Its why I like liner locks and frame locks best. They can and do give lock up with no wiggle.

My E4 waved model has the tightest lockup I've seen yet on an FRN folder. The only lock back I have had with blade play is my SE Spur and it's horizontal play is barely noticeable.

Nope, actually I have quite a few Spydies with the backlock, and none of them has any vertical play, except for a Byrd Cara Cara, however my Meadowlark is fine.

Edit:Well I might have a TINY bit of play, but after rechecking them all, I can' t feel any, so that's good enough for me:D

All my Spyderco lockbacks have had very very slight vertical play when that kind of upward force is applied to the blade. I've never noticed it unless I had my thumb on the back of the blade while doing heavy cutting.

The only lockback that I own that doesn't have any vertical play is actually an old Cold Steel san mai folder, so they do exist.

Thanks for the comments guys, just wanted to be sure. Seems it is just a design side effect maybe. The lock hasn't failed at all and the knife seems plenty tough, so no real complaints.

Hope all is well,
Aaron

I have some lockbacks that have zero bladeplay, and others that have it noticeably, including some Spydies. One of my Endura 4's (the SE version) has noticeable vertical play when applying cutting force. If I pull back a bit on the locked-open blade, there is a slightly audible click and subtle but visible movement. It's never failed, though. I never bought a Native, because every one I've handled had quite a bit of vertical play, some even horizontal play. Not saying it isn't good, just my experience.

Even my Buck 110 has a bit of play.

For what its worth a little play in a lockback will not in anyway mean it won't work fine and quite reliably.
