Endura 4 vs. Police 4 Lightweight for gloved/cold weather use: any compelling reason to choose the costlier Police?

Perhaps the Manix 2 because of the larger hole diameter? That aside, the Endura 4 is perfectly serviceable. The larger size of the Police is nice but not strictly necessary.

I took a look at the Manix 2, but think I'd prefer the Endura for what appears to be the taller thumb ramp, which also looks like it transitions more smoothly to the blade spine than on the Manix -- and for what looks like a longer handle, if not including the usable choil on the Manix. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

When wearing gloves I liked the Milli. Large spydie hole and a large handle. Felt more secure in my gloved hand.

I like the look of the Military! It seems to me that a back lock would be easier to operate with clumsy, gloved fingers than a liner lock -- though I know the Military has quite a generous handle cutout to access the liner.

Cheers

Looks like you've already stated why the Endura is better suited for what you're looking for, so the Endura is a no brainer.
For me, I like the bigger blade on the Police, that's the only reason why I didn't go with the Endura.

You're right that I'm leaning toward the Endura; just wanted to see if there were any features or characteristics I might be unaware of that would steer me in the other direction.

Cheers

For winter gloved carry I like either a UTX85 or Combat Troodon out the front; I find OTF's to be the best for me when wearing gloves.

I think you are spot on with your direction. If you don't need the extra blade length or the stabbieness of the police, the Endura 4 is the way to go. Another thought to consider would be the Pacific Salt 2 LC200N. Bigger spyderhole (and hump), nearly rust proof, less stabby than the Endura (for work), better steel IMO, and lighter weight. No, it doesn't have liners but I find the salt folders to be plenty robust. I think it would make an excellent, reduced maintenance (less sharpening, rust proof, less cleaning of the internals) work knife.

Thanks for suggesting the Pacific Salt 2! I remember seeing the original Salt sometime back; didn't know there was an Endura-sized model now available. That it has a slightly larger opening hole, taller thumb ramp, great corrosion resistance and no liners appeals to me for the this application. I do wish the yellow-handled model came with an FFG blade -- though that green handle in your pictures looks quite visible.

I'm intrigued and may take a closer look at the Salt 2 now.

If I were to cheat on my endura, it'd be with her thiccer cousin SS Stretch.

It's got a much meatier handle and prominent and useful choil. I would pick it over both the endura and police.

I love the look of the Stretch's meatier handle. For use with gloves, I'm thinking the Endura (or Pacific Salt 2) might be better for me, owing the the length of the handle -- but will keep in mind the Stretch, which looks great for using with thinner gloves or barehanded.

Cheers

I think you will be totally happy with Endura. Nothing wrong with VG10 either. Not a super steel but easy to touch up when needed.

Also, one nice thing about the spydie hole. If you have trouble opening it with bulky gloves on, you could always experiment with an appropriate size bolt and flat nut and poke it thru the hole. Maybe a little work with the dremel might be needed if you wanted to shape the threads. It might not win any beauty contests but it will easy to deploy with bulky gloves on.

Some people even put a zip tie thru the hole to make a "wave" type feature too. You might not need a wave but it would give you something to help *grab on too* to help open.

Both mods are easy to undo too.

Look at the pic you posted again.

I own multiple variations of both the Endura and the Police and there's NO WAY the handle on the Endura's "usable handle length is about the same, or perhaps even a little longer than . . . the Police."

The Police's handle and blade is undoubtely longer than those on the Endura because the blade in the Police is longer and it should be just as (if not more) managable than the Endura w/a pair of gloves on but either the Endura or the Police will do the job w/gloves on or off.

FWIW, I still own a Gen 1 FRN Endura Clip-it that I bought in the 90's and, if I didn't own the other 149 Spyderco's that I currently own, I'd be completely happy with it alone, as I was for the roughly 30 years before I started collecting knives.

LOL! ;)

Man, that's a lot of Spydercos you have, ha ha.

What I meant about the handle lengths is shown in the pic below -- I was referring to the space between the red lines, excluding the choil on the Police:

I can see how an OTF would be great for winter use. No such luck here in Canada, though; OTFs are illegal. Nonsensical, I know, but the idea of a knife whose blade can be opened automatically -- opposed to a knife whose blade can be flicked and locked open in hardly any more time -- frightens some people, I suppose.

Appreciate the tips, thank you! On a work knife, I wouldn't worry about the aesthetics; all that matters is comfort, performance, visibility and ergonomics.

A waved Endura is the only Spyderco I own, and I do like it quite a bit.

Having the waved feature, even with gloves on, allows the option of easy blade deployment directly from the pocket, without having to fiddle with with the thumb hole at all... if your looking an easy to use knife while wearing gloves, and already leaning towards the Endura, my suggestion would be to take a look at the waved version for sure.

Another option to consider!

Or get the normal LW Endura and google 5x5 combat solutions.
The device only apears bulkier but i tried it on numerous every day tasks and its not on the way at all
If for some reason you still dont like the size, you can easily cut and file the device to size that suits you, it will not affect its work which is btw very good. Solid install and works just as an Emersons wave.
