Endura / Delica - update - need input

Hi Sal,
Please don't make the tip of the blade look like salt. This kind of tip can not do small pricision cut. I hope you can make the stronger tip without looking like salt blade tip. I have seen some blade with strong tip and still pointe.

Thank you

Why I love my Delicas:

1) lightwieght
2) thin
3) replacable (price-wise)
4) take a beating

If I had to make a change it would be aluminum handles in various colors. I have a drawer full of knives with black handles and just don't need more.

Thanks for asking Sal. The fact that you seek input (and communicate directly with your customers) has alot to do with my love of your products.

Hehehe, just couldn't resist, pulled out my 13 year old Endura with G2 steel out of my pocket to seriously think this over. I am familiar with the newer versions which are pretty much the same except for the metal clips and different blade steels.

I have to side with the "if it aint broke" crowd, particularly with regard to the metal clips. PLEASE DO NOT go the wire route as that didn't work for me on the Meerkat and the Native III. If you really want to do something then maybe add some grooves where blade meets handle up to the hump, otherwise, she's still beautiful :D

I wish we could see some pictures and then have a vote on designs or something. That of course won't happen though for many reasons. I personally like the wire clip a lot. I also like the flat opposed to hollow grind, but I think no matter what they do to change it, I will still like it.

Way late here but personally I like a splinter picker point on my knife. So to me the Delica tip is just fine. If I was digging clams up or looking for coins under water then maybe I'd go with a Salt. Since I work with wood and get lots of splinters I like the Delica tip as is.

For the handle. I see no reason to change what works as far as the design goes. I would like to see some titanium or stainless liners incorporated into both the Endura and Delica even if just in a limited few for those of us that like that and feel it not only adds a touch of quality but also strengthens the body more.

I like the old Delica I have with the integral clip just fine. I have never had any problems with it at all and still carry that older Delica quite a bit. If the new clips are an improvement I would say great. Don't fix what ain't broken.

As for the steel. S30V is a great choice. I am fast becoming a fan of that steel but have no problems at all with the AUS6 steel in the Delica I currently carry. VG10 is also a good choice though.

Please go to a flat grind Sal on at least one of these models. Even if on just a limited run. I believe the flat grind blades are better slicers, and more durable than the hollow grind blades.

As for the choil issue. I can live without that. I don't see it as being that much of an advantage on the handle of the Delica or the Enduara as they are already pretty comforable in the hand as is.

I like the idea of putting some Spydie art on the body of the knife and the clip. Put the Spyder logo in red and black, or some other contrasting color scheme on the blade too for that matter. These Spyder logos always stood out to me and set the knife apart from the competition as visual eye candy so to speak. When the knives like the Centefonte folder sit in cases with other brands you can't help but zero in on the Spyderco knife because of that Spyder on the knife. It sucks in your attention right off the bat, even from a distance. I think you should use that logo more often and on both sides of all the knives you produce. Great selling tool there to me that has not been fully taken advantage of . (can you tell I'm a career retail salesman?)

Finally. I like the 11mm hole best of all. I don't see any reason to increase it from that size. I've never once had trouble opening my Spydercos with that size hole even with gloves on. 14mm is fine but 11mm works. 8mm is getting into the too small area for most IMO, but especially for people working outdoors with gloves on.

I like the Endura just the way it is. Wouldn't mind if Spyderco would add a mid-sized version in that style, halfway between the Delica and the Endura.

Regards,
bls

This may seem nit picky but a a better pocket clip would be geat. I find that the wire clips, such as those on the Lil' Temperance or Dodo tend to hold onto my pocket better. Otherwise, I see the Endura/ Delica as just fine as it is.

If the barrel clip goes, the old handle shape can return. I would really enjoy that. I find the blade close to perfect as it is. The tip proves very useful and I hope it remains unchanged. I'm very much looking forward to the new generation though.

more pronounced choil, i hate all choil-less models unless the edge is removed!

also, a G10 handle.

thanks!

just have two things I would like to see:

1) bigger finger hole

2) clip secure method other than barrel screw. I have a couple of endura sitting in my drawers because of the worn out clip well. I do love the easy adjustability of the barrel screw, but it's just too easy to twist the clip as is.

thanks.

Here's my bright idea:

How about a single nested steel liner, like the liner that's used on the Centofante III (great knife).
This would stiffen and strengthen the frame without unduly adding to the weight or thickness of the knife. It works well like that on the CentofanteIII.

The single liner idea would be particularly usefull for the Endura as it's a longer knife and as such the extra strength and stiffness from a single liner would be a usefull addition.

Just got my first Spyderco today, a Delica, and I love it except for one thing. The handle texture seems like it would wear down the edges of my pocket pretty fast, just like some folders I've carried. My idea would be for a small smooth spot on both sides of the handle where the clip makes contact with it to reduce abrasion without compromising grip.

Hi.

I'd like to thank all of you for all of the great input on the new designs. I can say that we've completed the designs. I can say there about 10 improvements. I can't say what they are yet. Sorry.

I do think they will be very nice.

I'll let you know more when tooling is completed.

Again, thanx for all of the input. The best way to make what you want is to find out what you want, in my opinion.

The entire "business chain" from; raw materials, manufacturing, marketing, selling, distributing, shipping, warrantees, insurance, credit, etc. ALL EXISTS to service the ELU (End Line User). Remove the ELU from the equation and the entire business chain falls like a house of cards. We all work for you!

Thanks for the update mr. Glesser Sir. :) It is impressive (to me at least) that you could make 10 improvements! I was thinking the Delica is sooo close to perfection (maybe a weak spot or two, but 10!)
Will it still look like the Delica we use to know (and love)? ;)

Hi Alex.

improvements do not necessarily indicate weakness. ;)

You will have no problem identifying it as a Delica.
