This will be my first Spyderco knife, which should I get for self defense/edc? Does the ffg have a lot weaker tip?

If you use your knife as a knife you shouldn't have to worry about the tip. I'd go with the FFG.

the FFG has a thinner weaker blade but is better for slicing imo i prefer the normal saber grind

Use it as knife man, right tool right job, then you'll have no problem...
if you use it really hard like a pry bar, buy a saber grind. But you'll have to admit that FFG is GREAT. I can do anything with it...

That is the problem with dedicated SD knives. An SD situation is a very fluid one, and you may not have the choice to say, I won't use it that way or your knife may be receiving impacts from different angles.

I very much love my FFG ZDP Endura and my FFG Endura in VG-10 for the awesome slicing machines that they are. In regular work chores, you have the option of using it carefully. However, in SD you may not have the luxury of not twisting an embedded knife. You may also hit hard material(bone or say if you miss a strike and hit a surrounding object) with the tip. That's why I prefer a sturdier blade profile than that of my FFG Enduras on my SD knife.

One of the things I like best about Spyderco is their FFG blades but that's just me.

i only have the ffg, but it is great for edc. it slices good and the thinner tip is good for taking out splinters. this isn't so much of the grind as the edge but be careful of stapmes when cutting boxes. my brother chiped the tip a little on one.

The Full Flat Grinds are worth the money — especially with the colored handles.

I bought three of them and replaced a lost Endura 3 full-serrated edge too.

Yes, one has to be careful with the tips on them.

I'd definitely go for the FFG. Much more visually appealing and adds to the overall streamlined look of the blade. I'm actually selling my Endura with the Sabre grind in order to get another that's FFG.

I EDC an old Endura 3 with a saber grind. Today that would be similar to a Pacific Salt. When I want to use a better FFG slicer, I've got a bunch of Mule's, Military's, Para-Military2's, and the G10 Endura.

I'd have to side with the sabre grind myself. I own both and prefer the ruggedness of the sabre grind.

I like FFG. When properly sharpened - i.e., killer sharp, it will go through cardboard like magic, with almost no pressure. A real pleasure for us knife weirdos.

So if you are into slicing, go FFG. If you might be scraping the grass off of a lawnmower blade or digging up a weed in the flower bed, stick with sabre. JMO.

Definitely get the FFG one man! It is a lot thicker than you think. I got an FFG Delica firs and I thought the Endura blade was gonna be of that thickness but boy was I WRONG! We must remember that any folding knife is only as strong as where it's broken in the middle! If you use the knife realistically then you will not have any problems!
