Endura lockback failure?

Here is a link to a video i made showing the problem.

Also, thg i think you traded me a different endura, you traded me the white one right? or was that another person? Also, I cleaned the knife and adjusted the screws. I think the problem is either the spring, the lockbar or the notch where the bar is supposed to lay, but i cant see where.

Wow, I can even hear the lock click when you open it. If it weren't for the fact you said you disassembled the knife and cleaned it, I would agree with those who have said you have lint in the tang notch, but the lock wouldn't click like that. I'll be interested to hear what the manufacturer has to say about it.

You are sending it in to Spyderco, right?

Yeah, I think I will be, I really have no idea whats wrong with it and I hope they can shed some light on it.

Your lock geometry is out of spec. Same thing happened to my Pacific Salt after an inadvertent spine whack.

I made a thread about it that goes into the how/why but can't find it since I don't have search access anymore. If you want to find it do a search for the threads I've started, it should have "Pacific something" in the title.

Here's a pic of the damage to the lockface on my Pacific:

I found your thread here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4844050

and it looks quite like my problem. I had noticed the slight damage to the lockbar, but it was so slight that I didnt think it could have caused failure. Wow.
I'm not sure how I even caused the damage... I don't use the knife to baton, or spine whack things... maybe it happened before I got it, or when I loaned it to somebody.

Does this problem constitute abuse and void the warranty? Is there a way to fix this myself, like sanding the rough parts of the edge off for example? Good to know someone had the same problem at least

Oh, thank God lol

Well in your video, the lock engagement sounds VERY weak. It should sound like a nice clack. Something is obviously not right. If you open it, you might be able to see what's wrong, but if you send it to the factory, I'm sure you'll be taken care of.

Absolutely send that one back to Spyderco. Something is definitely up there!

Sounds like the back spacer. The one flaw of the 4th series of the endura/delica

That was my first thought. On my Endura 4 I dropped onto the shop floor off of a ladder and when I went to close it something felt off. When I re-opened it the spring was no where near what it once was. After taking it apart I found the problem to be on of the little plastic tabs in the backspacer that slides into the liners had sheered off. I am yet to replace it but I am sure that one of the ultralight kits would fix the problem.

On a used knife, especially if it's all screw construction, it's hard to say for certain whether a problem like this is a warranty issue, but it certainly sounds like it could be one. Best advice, assuming the you lives in the US, is to send it back to Spyderco for evaluation.

Well, I have disassembled and reassembled mine and there's no way lint or crud would remain, unless you carefully chose to put the lint and crud back in when you reassembled the knife.

LOL. Pretty funny, thanks. Brought tears to my eyes.

My buddy and I purchased an axis auto years back. After a year, he brought it to me and said he broke his. He carries it in the pocket without the clip. I looked at it and it opened very slowly. I took the knife and rinsed it in hot water. I oiled it and the knife was back to 100%. I would agree if he disassembled it, it would take care of the lint. The worked in junk (candy, gum, sand, etc) would require and wash down.

It sounds like the problem is more serious. I'd clean it and if the problem persists, send it in.

I am curious if the OP ever heard back from Spyderco or if he even sent the knife in?

I recently had a similar problem with an Endura and I sent the knife in (delivered Dec 1 2014) and have yet to hear back from them on the provided cell#, email, or mailing address. Hopefully I will hear from them soon.

Dear Sir or Ma’am,

Please examine the enclosed knife and make a determination as to whether or not it can be repaired. This is a pocket knife that I bought a few years ago and put up in the box until last Christmas when I gave it to my son when he was old enough for it.

It recently stopped locking in place and closed on his hand. I have cleaned and examined the knife and cannot see any obstruction around the lock or inside of the blade channel impeding the lock, and think that possibly the locking mechanism is simply broken.

If you can repair or replace the knife I would greatly appreciate it. If you do replace it, please do so with a plain edge version so it won’t cut his hand so badly if the lock fails again. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

It's unlikely you'll hear an update from the thread starter as he hasn't even logged in nearly 4 years.

Of course, just because I could not see anything impeding the lock does not mean that there might not be something inside that I couldn't see. It has been carried by my son for nearly a year.

I was surprised that this happened because I still have an older model Endura with a built on plastic clip that I bought for my father back in the mid-1990s (IIRC the timeframe) that he used for a good while and I got back from his stuff when he passed away several years ago and the lock on it is fine. I thought when I bought this one for my son (and still do now) that they are very reliable knives, but like anything mechanical, there is a chance of failure from one cause or another. I believe in the overall quality of Spyderco and in the Endura model enough, that my other (older) son has one from me, my wife has one, and I have one (as well as 5 military models). Eventually I may get an Endura for my daughter when she is older... in pink or purple if it is available. :)

Has anyone besides the OP and myself experienced lock failure with an Endura?

While unrelated to lock engagement, the parts kits (both Delica and Endura) are being discontinued. If these matter to you, stock up now.

FWIW, the average "turnaround" time for a knife sent to Spyderco with a warranty issue is 3 weeks and, unless there's a specific need to do so, they do not normally correspond with the owner, they just repair or replace the knife and send it back. In your case however, they may contact you, as it's generally their policy to replace knives with the closest current version of the same model in terms of materials, color, grind, and edge type.
