Hey all,

In an effort to get more exercise and to explore the basics of self defense with a knife, I'm ordering a Endura trainer, as it's the one production knife that makes it into my pocket more often than any other. I was thinking of ordering one of Michael Janichs' DVD's as well, as I like what he has to say on MBC via his posts here and on the Spydie site. Can anyone give some feed back on his vids, pro's, cons, other options? As always all help is much appreciated.

Cheers,
Rob

Michael's concepts and moves are very well thought out and I do not think you can lose by watching and at least trying some of his moves. (practice is best). Sensible and efficient, and probably things you haven't thought of.

Thanks for the info Sal. You make a great knife. I figure I have nothing to lose as I don't know anything about this stuff. I know that Michael had, at one time, something to do with Spyderco's MBC thing, speaks volumes to me.

Cheers,
Rob

One of the only really first rate knife fighting texts that I have found for free is Col Applegates "Kill or get Killed in PDF. Since it is a marine core text it is available for free several places on the net including a site called Steve's Pages. It is definitly of the school "the best defence is a good offence" but is also simple and a good place to start. Although they use a dagger similar to the FS most of the moves are just as valid with the Endura.

I recommend the Endura/Endura trainer combo to most people looking for a MBC folder.
You can get a nice VG10/FRN Endura and trainer for 100$

Anything with Michael Janich's name on it is golden, and highly recommended! The complete system is contained in the "Fighting Folders" series and "Counter Blade Concepts" DVDs. The "quick study" is the "Martial Blade Concepts" DVD. The "Counter Blade Concepts" is particularly recommended for everybody, because it's all probably going to start with your hands empty.

One failure in a lot of knife training is to concentrate on blade on blade fighting or unarmed counters to an attackers knife. I like to do knife versus handgun and knife versus unarmed
or knife versus multiple unarmed opponents because these are the types of attacks I am likely to deal with. Actually blade versus blade is much more applicable where I live than in the US where you will probably face a handgun. This sounds scary but is not nearly as bad as most people(especially handgun owners) think. At close range against an untrained adversary with a handgun a trained fighter with a knife has a few advantages.

Be realistic about your greatest threats and prepare for them.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Like I said this is mostly for exercise, as I'm a stay at home dad, getting the time to exercise out of the house is not an option. I've decided to purchase an Endura trainer and Michael Janichs' MBC crash course DVD, I'll see how that works out for me.

Thanks again to all,
Rob

Michael Janich sent me a copy of his MBC DVD a while back. I think its great. It has nothing you dont need and everything you do. It gets to the "down and dirty" if you will.
