Enemys of the state.

I read a lot of detective stories, and you've certainly got the feel. It's sort of "film noir" kind of thing that's very popular in the genre. Check out Dennis Lehane or Robert Crais ("Elvis Cole" series) for some modern, very good, examples.

I'm only 49 but feel the tug of the older times. My Dad was born in 1917 though, so that might have something to do with it. I grew up seeing the world through older eyes.
