Engraving Bolsters

Hey fellas,

I am currently trying to make a Tanto style blade with an expensive stabilized burl. Since it looks like I'm going for a "fancy" knife look, I was wondering... if I have a jeweller engrave a design on the bolsters, will the pins show up? I'm asking because usually, engraving etches into the metal and the mushroomed pins can only be grind down so much until they start showing again.

Looking forward to everyone's feedback! :)

Engraving lines over a flush pin can make the pin show. Good engravers locate the pin and engrave around it-incorporating it into the design.
BTW- most jewelers are not engravers.

Ahh okay. I was introduced to this place where they engrave everything (plates, metals, watches, knives...etc.). They aren't a jewler place. They use a engraving machine and charge 10$.

I'll see what they can do.

Thanks!

If they use a fiber laser, then the pin won't matter. If they use a diamond drag engraver, it can upset the pin.

If you just want an initial or a simple mass design (deer head, flower) etched into the handle a jeweler can do it. An engraver is a different profession... and costs more due to the equipment and skills.
