Hello fellas:

One of my clients wants engraving on the double guard and subhilt - 416SS - no problem. The design of the knife blade lends itself to engraving on the ricasso - is this possible prior to heat treatment? Any insights would be helpful.

Best regards,

TK

I never tried engraving that steel. If you can cut it (and you probably can, but you may need cobalt gravers) you may need to refinish the area after heat treatment because it will be discolored.

GRS makes engraving tools and are engravers, they could answer the question. 800-835-3519 or grstools.Com

P. S. LOVE your knifes

Prior to heat treating it won't be a problem . Our friend , Danae Cresswell , who is attempting to teach me engraving, has no trouble engraving the stainless steel blades.

As Adam (Parkerknives) has said TK, won't be a problem before heat treat. You will need to mask off the engraving some how if you are going to solder. Here are a few pics of Danae's work on my knives. Blade steel in these was 440C but I know she has done CPM154 as well. I have also had ATS34, D2, and 420C engraved in the past by other engravers. They all said the blade steels were tougher to cut but had no major issues. I'm sure you can find an engraver close to you that can do the work. If they can't I would ask why a 24 year old young lady in Australia can but they can't :)

To all:

Thanks for the information - much appreciated!!
