Has anyone here bought a knife from Knifeworks and had it engraved? I'm considering buying a couple of knives and having this done. I'd like to see pix if available that show how the engraving looks and I'd like to hear opinions and observations on how the engraving holds up in use. Thanks in advance.

Hey Lee.
My sons had a 710-1401 engraved with their initials for me. Came out really nice.
I'll get a pic of it up for you a little later.
It has held up really well and looks great!

I have quite a few knives engraved by them. I would suggest that if you do not want them to make the font very large, you email them and tell them as soon as you place the order. Sometimes whoever runs the engraver makes the font too big for my taste so I always email them and tell them exactly how I want the font to appear.

I agree. I have had a couple of knives engraved by them, the first one I didn't specify font size and they engraved the blade in huge letters, I hated it, in fact I don't even use the knife because of that, I was actually shocked when I saw it; I email them about it and of course I could not send it back, nor do anything about it.

I learned my lesson though, and that did not stop me from ordering from them again, since I think their service is top notch, so in the next couple of knives, I actually made the request in the "notes from customer" box, and I asked for proof of engraving; so what they did is that they sent me an email with a picture of how it would look after they engraved the blade; and they would not proceed until I approved it. If you don't like the proof, you can be even more specific and tell them what you want, like 'I want such font, in 2mm height parallel with the top of the spine, on the presentation side', or something like that.

So, as long as you specify that you want proof of engraving, and specify the location and the size of the text, everything will be fine; but don't just ask for engraving and place your order or they will do it wherever they think it's the right size and place in their mind.

Regarding the quality of engraving, it is done with a laser, so it actually burns a layer of the surface of the blade and will stay there for a long time, you would need to sand it off to make it go away, and that might not take it off; I'd say their engraving is also very good quality, it is not just printing but actually engraving.

I hope that helps.:)

on a ESEE Junglas, too big and misplaced to my taste, but no choice except the font when placing order.
It was for a gift to my father, and as long it's a gift, my father is very happy :D

See what I was talking about? I need to find that knife so you can see it.
But at any rate, that doesn't look bad at all, maybe it could be placed on another spot, and maybe in smaller letters, but I actually like it; it looks cool with the shape and config of the knife; if I got that with my name on it as a gift, I would actually love it.
That's a cool gift to your dad, you're a good son.
Thanks for posting the picture, I like their engraving; it's pretty good in my opinion.

My daughter surprised me a couple of Chrismas's ago with this nice Benchmade Triage from them, she had a G2 put on the blade, has held up pretty well.

Sounds a plan. I had my very first traditionals engraved (gifts to my sons), and the results were not what I expected. On one, the initials (three letters) were disproportionately big; on the other, the kerning was off.

("Kerning" refers to [adjustments of] the space between individual letters or characters. Uniform spacing does not always work well visually; non-uniform spacing likewise look bad if one does not have an eye for it.)

*twitch* *twitch*

I wish I'd known about requesting previews for approval.

As for the quality/endurance of the etch, no worries there. One cannot easily remove these etches. Maybe don't ask me how I know. ;)

At one time they were referred to as points and picas. ;)
There are 12 points in every Pica, and a Pica is smidge less than 1/16th".

I picked up a Benchmade and they had free engraving, I had my initials added and the lettering looks great. It's kind of a dark charcoal-gray, not deeply engraved, the font is nice, I like it.

I haven't used that knife yet, so I'm unable to comment on how it wears.

I suddenly want more foster kitten babies to name. ;)

-- Thank you for the further elucidation.

As far as holding up in use,I don't think you would ever have any trouble at all on an uncoated blade.
