hello,

Recently a client ordered a hunting knife and wanted some engraving on the blade. Since I am a novice (hobbyist) knifemaker, I need some help. I found an engraver to do the job, but want to know how to polish the blade (ats 34) after the hardening.

As an engraver and a knifemaker first a few questions. What type of engraving system does the individual have? If you are going to engrave the blade then about the only method available after heat treating is a highspeed engraver, otherwise the blade will be to hard for the gravers to push the metal properly. If the engraver is using a high speed system then polish the blade as you normally would. Most engtavers will polish out any ruff areas left over from the engraving job.If you need further assistance contact me.

The engraver will use traditional hand tools. I dont know the correct english nomenclature, but I mean the hand held chisels used to engraving guns. No powertools. The guy who is going to engrave is a teacher in the 'famous' gun making school in Liège, Belgium.

I'd check with the engraver first. I'm sure he has a deep enough understanding of metal to know what you'll be doing, and he could take your finishing after heat treat into account when he chooses the depth of his engraving. If he knows you're going to take off a mm or two before he engraves, then he'll be able to take that into account. He also might have some ideas on how to do the finish polish as well.
