enhancing engraving

I recently finished a filet knife for a customer and had some basic engraving (name and dates) done for him locally. The engraver, a gift shop owner, uses a pantograph device which did a less than deep finished product. The customer would like a more striking finish than was produced. He is 2 states away with the knife and I'd like to give him some help toward this end. Does anyone know of an easy way to create the contrast to make the engraving more readable. I'm thinking about permanent marker in the scratches, then 2000 grit to remove surface color. Any ideas?
Thanks,

pantograph machines do not leave a deep enough etch to "blacken"

You could set him up with a hand engraver that would result in a deeper engraving that could take ink or paint

If the engraving is on hardened steel, a hand engraver will have no part of it!
You can use black magic marker, and remove the excess with WD 40 on a paper towel. It won't hold up, though.
