I've been checking out an interestingly designed Puma knife and would like to have some input on it.

Here's the discription:

  • Puma Solingen Tosca Defender Fixed Blade.
  • Polished 4-3/8" German 440 C Stainless Steel Blade.
  • Beautiful Red Stag Handle with Brass Fasteners.
  • Full Tang Construction..
  • Overall length is 8-1/2".
  • High quality Top Grain Brown Leather Sheath.
  • Made in Spain.

I'm specifically curious about "German 440 C". What is that and does the Spanish Puma have a very good heat treatment?

Any experience with new Puma product welcome.

I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about the specifics of the steel terminology. The steel could be made in Germany or could be made elsewhere (just like the 440C they make in Germany, assuming they make 440C in Germany.) It could be the standard 440C composition or something similar or comparable.

It is safe to say that the Spanish make perfectly decent and useable knives that perform well for their owners. Several of the German manufacturers have gone to Spain for fixed blade production to reduce costs and be more competitive with Asian imports. I suspect the knife is probably a good value and a good product.
