Ennis-Entrek Forester...

I'm not a fan of 440C either. I'd pass.

Hey 440c ain't that bad when heat treated well. It's been around a long time...

Marion,

I would love to see some pictures of this knife. Do you plan on ordering one?

I like 440C also. I have a few old Bucks in 440C that have served me well over the years.

I am a big 440C fan. I actually would choose it over s30v or 3v just cause I know how to sharpen it out in the field. I personally feel that 5160 and 440c just don't get enough love! I wonder how it would do in a scandi.

Now, before this turns into a loyalty battle, remember, the Buschcraft NW is just a re-work of the classic Mora shape, barrel handle etc...
Well all they had to do was to re-work the mora in their own way. Unless they have some agreement with BNW, ripping off is ripping off whatever people want to make it look like.

looks cool.. i also really like 440c and prefer much more over other stainless steels.. i may have to check one out...:D
from what i understand, Ray Ennis used to make the BCNW-01 knives for MIke L of BCNW... now i believe Koster is grounding the blades..

Sorry guys. I wasn't trying to knock 440C. Thats just a personal opinion. I have several knives in 440C and use them.

I've just had a bad string of bad luck with it. I've come full circle and really prefer 420HC for a stainless that is easy to maintain.

All that said, it probably is the heat treat that has scared me away from 440C. I've had several knives prove to be a bit brittle on the edge and I hate having to fix chipped edges.

I don't see why they would put a 2ndary bevel on it, and wouldn't that make it a saber grind and not a full flat grind???

I like 440C, like Joe I feel it doesn't get the respect it deserves.

Anyway, I'll pass on the knife, it does nothing for me.

I have one of the knives Ray made when he was designing the Entrek line. It is quite sturdy and he does a good job with 440C. I've had good experiences with that steel.

No, I am too po'.

I just saw your thread, and thought I should get these guys into the game.

Also, knowing these guys.... Someone will have one within the next 60 days, so stay tuned.

I emailed Mike Lummio of Bushcraft NW, for his take on the situation, and with his permission, I am quoting his response....

"Thank you for the email and information. Ray at Entrek used to make my BCNW-O1 knife at the beginning stages and asked for my permission to make a knife similar to mine once he stopped making my knives. I said "sure" as he is a very nice and honorable person and took on my project when no one else would. Even though his knife looks like mine, it's actually quite different. Most notably is the fact that it is not a true, flat Scandi grind but convex with a secondary bevel which isn't near as good for bushcraft purposes. It is also made of 440 stainless as well as having thinner handle scales for a completely different feel. While I'm sure the Forester is a high quality knife like all of Ray's work, I don't think we're really serving the same customers. Most bushcrafters I know are looking for a Scandi grind and tool steel

It's very hard to copyright a knife design as evident by all of the Woodlore copies out there. I hope that people will see the difference between my knife and its copies and will willingly support the original maker and design."

Thank you, Marion. A BIG thumb's-up to Mike Lummio for having that kind of confidence in his own design, and the cooperative spirit to acknowledge a fellow knifemaker, too.

I like the look of the Entrek. That kind of handle works well for me. Like many here, I'd probably be even more pleased with the BCNW's performance.

I'm afraid the BCNW will be to thick/wide for my hands. That's why I'm looking towards this. I love my Mora #2.

that is what i thought as well, i have fairly small hands (M) and it fits my paws great.. it is a solid workhorse of a knife...

I can hold a big leuku handle with no problem, so I don't worry about size. The barrel shape is particularly comfortable for me.

Just my take:

440c is good for a stainless, or some what stainless steel. But it's not tough like O-1. It's just not, doesn't matter who heat treats it. It trades in some of it's toughness for stain resistance. I would also guess the 440c is the reason for the lack of a scandi grind. As most know, a scandi grind has a weaker edge than a convex and a weak edge + a high chromium stainless steel is going to be more prone to chipping.
