Anyone here own or handled an Entrek knife? They look like they are solid and very high quality at a very nice price. I was looking at The Survivor for ~$85- is this a good deal. It comes w/ a kydex sheath; any opinions on the sheath too would be much obliged.  Please let me know your opinions, experience w/ the knives and any problems you may have had. thanks.
I was looking at TOPS knives(which look primo!), but they are just out of my price range at the time.:(

Listen, I hate to be a d!ck, but I just searched this forum for "Entrek" and came up with 11 threads.

For what it's worth, several people yelled at me when I first got here for not using the search function.

I won't chastise you for not using the search function, esp as I am a newbie around here.
I have had and used an Entrek and for the money you are getting on hell of a knife. I have paid more for knives that do less.
Not sure if anyone has any 'current' opinions on these blades but I say go for it.

1. People that yell at you that you should first use the search function need a spanking. People that may be new to this forum, are sometimes new to forums in general and don't know the ropes. Don't feel bad, we like talking about knives for practically any reason.

2. I've had an Entrek Survivor before. Ray Ennis is a great guy, great maker, and I thought it was a heck of a knife for the price. The only reason I sold it was that the handle was a little small (read thin) for my medium/large hands. If it had been a little more hand filling, I would have kept it. The blade is thick (3/16" I think) so it is hefty.

3. Those of us with military affiliation like them. I used it for my primary carry knife while in the "field". I didn't put it through much use though, but a good article on Ray's knives appeared in Tactical Knives a couple of years ago which indicated they were well respected.

Hello,

First of all, I would like to say that I too am a newbie here on BF and am still learning the lingo and etiquette. This said, I will apologize in advance if my comments are wrong...but they are just comments and nothing more.

I'm sorry...but I just have to add my thoughts about the "Search" issue. Understandably, a person can find alot of info (and possibly answers to any question) using the "Search" function...but with so many new people registering on BF every week, sometime the best thing to do is just 'jump right in' and start a discussion! It upsets me to hear that someone has been yelled at for starting a discussion, only because someone else MAY HAVE talked about the same topic in the past.

Normally I'd be discouraged to continue on with a forum, especially if this was the first response I got...but, because I have participated in this forum for a couple of weeks now, I have come to find that 99% of the time you'll have a good, informative experience!

Just because a topic has been addressed, does not nean all the details have been brought to surface. There are so many new people in here with new info/ideas, but may never get to share them because noone asks...they just 'search' the archives.

I don't know, these are just some thoughts of mine.

Anyway, I do not own an Entrek but I do have a Montroc Ronin. It was my first major knife purchase(in my eyes). I had just graduated highschool and wanted to start a collection. I had seen it advertised in a knife mag and thought it was 'bad ass'. Well, it's been almost ten years now and it still hasn't seen any action! But for me, that's alright...like I said, it was my first major blade.

Not to take away from the original post...I have been wondering if anyone else has handled one in the field? Since Entrek and Montroc are basically the same (from what I've heard?) I will stay tuned to the response Bhodisatva recieves, and go from there.

I apologize for the 'big lungs' (long wind...) and thanks for the time.

You will hardly get a better custom user for your money. Good all-around steel and the designs are practical. Nothing fancy, but inexpensive and useful custom working knives.

I'm the sheriff around here.

If anyone gets chewed out for failing to use the search function, especially a newbie, just let me know. I will take care of 'em.

Hey guys, thanks for the input.:D From what I "hear" the knives themselves are excellent(esp for the $), but the sheaths are not that high in quality, and I'm somewhat discouraged by the weight of the knives. I will be using the knife mostly in the woods, and I would like to carry it on backpacking trips, where I try to be a minimalist and carry the least amount of weight in order to cover more ground. These knives seem to fit the bill with one exception-weight. They are very solid,no-nonsense design, corrosion resistance of 440C,and durable; but along with the solid build comes weight! I'm torn between getting a flimsy, yet lightweightknife, or a solid, but heavy knife that will last me a long time. Oh well, I guess you can't have it all.:(

BTW, anybody know where I could get a quality kydex sheath made for a reasonable price? and how much? thanks:D

Komondor- Whuts the problum here Occifer? Sorry, I failed to read your post before proceeding with mine. So whats the deal sheriff? Are you going to crucify me too, for being a newbie that was ignorant to the search function? I'm just trying to gain some direct insight on a possible future purchase w/out going through 20 different threads to see if my questions might be answered there. Oh well, at least we are talking about knives here.:D

You would be hard put to find a better heavy use knife than the Entreks. While they are thick and therefore heavier than dainter knives you can hack, pound, dig, and (oh yeah) cut with them. The sheaths are not wonderful, but you could send your knife off to Mike Sastre at RiverCitySheaths.com and he'll make a reasonable carrier for it and you'll still be under the price of comparable knives.

I've had early Montroks and current Entreks. I've advised friends that want a durable well made field knife to get them. I guess you could say that I enthusiatically support them.

Montrok was an earlier effort on Ray's part to produce the knives. The sheaths were very early kydex and were pretty rough.

hso,

What models of the Montroc line did you have? I'm looking to see what anyone thinks of the "Ronin" model. Did you have this model, or know of anyone that may have some info on it's performance? I know it's a heavy duty knife, but the only thing I'm wondering about the angle of the cutting edge (thick?) on such a short blade, and if I should have it profiled down?

thanks for any info you may have.

I bought this knife and it's a gem. Entrek Knives are very underrated and Ray makes one heck of a knife. I stropped mine on my sharp maker and it sharpens really easy. They tested my model not too long ago in Tacitical Knives magazine and it got good reviews. You won't be disappointed. The sheath that it came with could be better but, thats besides the point

Leaving black sun's crudeness, Welcome aboard Bhodisatva.
The Entrek knives are well constructed, but on the "sharpened pry bar' end of the scale. The sheaths are crude, but serviceable.
IMHO, you would be better served by a BK&T Combat 9 or Combat/Utility 7, also by BK&T. Lots of info about these knives on the Camillus forum.
