Both of them have the similar sticking out the tang end of the blade. Is it possible that this is the permanent design feature of the slipjoint knives?
Not at all. If you look at Victorinox made aka Swiss Army Knives, they are perfectly flush with the handles with no hot spots.
However, with slip joints, this tang thing is very common. Also in LOT of them, they are also sharp and hence pretty uncomfortable. I usually take file and sandpaper and round my the tangs, because there is no harm done if you do it subtly.
That's one more thing I admire about SAK's, because they are just so perfectly finished on that aspect as well (including tips not poking out of the handle when closed).
