I hear a lot of people lamenting Buck's decision to limit steel choices.....and I kind of hate to see it myself. It seems we're stuck with S30V for the most part.......and we wonder......WHY?

So, I happened on this thread--which I found interesting.

Why did they ban Cliff Stamp anyway? He sounds like he was a good guy to have around?

Anyhow.....here it is.

Lots of sophisticated steel talk, that's for sure.

I read enough of Cliff's comments to see that he was just trolling by bashing on Paul Bos and Buck Inc.

Your comment above suggest you're looking to stir up a little stink too. :thumbdn:

I didn't see that. I'll have to read through it again. This was not a Buck Forum discussion, but a thread from the General Knife Discussion forum. I went through the 18 pages pretty fast, but I don't recall seeing anything about Buck and Bos.

Did you really read it?

I saw it as a fascinating (if maybe sometimes a little too technical) discussion of different types of steel by a lot of pretty astute people, including Mr. Stamp.

I'll take another look.

bg42 edge = cliff stamp...funny how you just"found"that thread...

I found it by accident while searching for info about the Buck Logo. I've been wondering why it changed.

I don't know anything about Cliff Stamp other than he seemed to be a steel expert.

No.......I don't claim to know a lot about steel......except I wish Buck offered a few more choices.

Nothing wrong with that.

:)

LOL thats classic :D

We're "stuck" with S30V :D LOL :D

Anyone that "laments" about bucks steel limitations should have bought one pre 1980'S :D Buck has a ton of different offerings currently, and every knife they use S30V in, is suited for that steel. I guess if a guy wants an axe or machete he shouldnt be buying a 110 with S30V :D

except I wish Buck offered a few more choices.

We now have
420HC
12C27M
13C26
ATS-34
154CM
CPM154
S30V

And there has been BG-42 and 440C very recently as well in the last decade etc... on and on! (sorry if I missed anyone :D )

So who is "we"?????????

Right now S30V is the only premium steel offered by the Custom Shop on the 110s.

It would be nice if they could do even a little bit better. Even two or three would be nice.

;)

Even two or three options would be nice.

If you don't see that, perhaps you erroneously clicked on the "Ignore Reality" option.

:D

Smart! (That's exactly why I don't pay much attention to you.)

But you CAN get in trouble for intentionally derailing threads and making hostile and irrelevant comments.

You and Fritz are going down that road now.

I read it again, Flat.

I don't see any bashing on Bos or Buck. I see him asking for proof or links to verify statements by others about Buck heat treating, etc.

That was a very minor part of the 18 pages of good info.

Unless you can show examples that I missed, I have to call BS.

This is an informative thread with a lot of input from many worthy contributors. You sort of killed it.

Cliff Stamp was an argumentative and controversial contributor who was not universally admired as a steel expert. He was finally banned for deliberately insulting this website and its owner.

A specific question on encouraging Buck to expand the custom shop steel choices has nothing to do with Cliff Stamp, and introducing him in a discussion will have the effect of distracting from the original topic, however inadvertently.

On the question itself, Buck is one of those companies that does limit their steel choices, which allows them to develop a few consistently rather than many experimentally. Also, Buck has seen other changes recently: moving to a new state, and bringing back models from China. The Custom Shop itself is something extra -- any choices available are more than many companies provide, not having an equivalent division.
