Very nice! How durable (or fragile) are mammoth scales? They appear to be on the fragile side, but I have no idea.

That is a question that is asked quite often.

The mammoth scales are actually quite durable. All the texture cracks that you see are just that, texture. None of them are penetrating. If material is dry and prepared correctly, it lasts a long time on a knife.

Considering it is already 10,000 years old, it doesn't look too bad!!

The problem with mammoth ivory CAN be if a maker uses it when it is still too wet from being buried in the ground. Then it will shrink and warp.

I am VERY careful about what we use and how it is used. The material on this knife has been out of the ground and drying for at least 4 years. It was also dried after the scales were cut and before they were fitted to the knife. It will be beautiful material for quite a while.

The ivory is like any other natural material, it will change with changes in the conditions surrounding it. Lay an ivory knife on the front seat of a car in the sun, and it will not be pretty. But normal care, a little wax, and no extreme changes in temperature or humidity and the ivory does very well. It will move, but so will wood, bone or any other natural material. Like everything else, a little care taken will avoid big problems.

Thanks for asking. I hope I've offered enough information. Let me know if you think of anything else.

Pappy
