I'm new to HTing SS and have a question (or questions) about Equalizing. I have searched using the search engine and think I understand it now. However, I would like to be certain since I think I understood incorrectly the 1st time I looked.

My current understanding is that Equalizing is bringing the steel up to a "pre-heat" temp below critical and soaking for a period of time (15 min. at 1500F for Nitro-V) followed by a ramp up to final temp (1900F for 15 minutes). Is this correct?

My original understanding was that Equalizing was almost like another name for Normalizing and involved taking the blade out of the kiln after it got to the pre-heat temp and letting it cool to room temp without using plates or forced air. Then the blade would be put back in the kiln and held at final temp for the prescribed time and plate quenched. Unfortunately, I recently did some AEB-L this way. I don't have any type of hardness testing equipment...hopefully soon...so I just follow the recipes for now. Any ideas on what problems this may have caused?

Thanks in advance and hey, it was just 2 questions!
