equipment for a day in the woods

Oh! I forgot the most important items. My Digi camera and hiking stick . Well at least I think so.

I wear a becker necker around my neck on an od para cord. I carry a swiss army OH trekker in the watch pocket of my jeans. I dont like to carry edc on my body, it all goes into a messenger bag.

I carry a messenger bag anytime I head out for a day hike, it has a silva compass dangling from the key keeper. Maybe cause I was in the Navy for a long time and made alot of treks in asia, Im really obsessive about staying found. Depending if the area is unknown, I will have a map of the area.

I always take a five dollar tube tent and a 2 dollar mylar space blanket with me. I see these two items take some hits on reputation but they are favorite items of gear, I cant even begin to count how many times Ive used them. And Im not afraid to use them either, I dont wait for a survival situation, they're cheap and I can buy them easily so I use them at a drop of a hat, if it's raining and I want to relax and read a paper back book for a while or take a nap, or do some cooking, up goes the tent, the second I get a little too chilly, out comes the space blanket. They are tools like a pocket knife for me, to be used regularly.

metal cup, (sometimes a small pan!) but it's light! Guys I have tried cooking and boiling water with natural materials, with folded paper, A japanese camper once tried to teach me origami techniques for folding a variety of camp items out of paper, sorry Im too stupid. I love to cook outdoors, even just a hot lunch, so metal gear is essential for my style. And once in a while I've been known to carry a small bottle of wine or small bottle of whiskey, I dont have a flask. If I carry wine, I need to carry my EKA pocket knife, its been on alot of dates with me in the past and has the memories of alot of great picnics and pretty girls attached to it. Now like me it is reserved for family duties.

Fire? well there is a pouch in my bag, that has a bic lighter and matches, but I never use them. Any fire Ive started for years now has its origin from a fire steel that serves as a key chain fob. I dont want to sound like Im some great woodsman but mostly I just need one swipe of the steel to get the fire going. I like to do a nice job preparing my fire before I start it. I dont carry tinder either. I guess someday Im going to regret it.

I dont mind finding water naturally and I often do, but I will always set off with a bottle of water. I will drop a tea bag into my boiled water.

Maybe I sound like a wuss, but these days Ive been carrying bear spray with me, mostly because of dogs. It never was a part of my standard gear. I dont really like to carry it, but I have used it on three big dogs that charged me and were very aggressive, recently. Worked like a charm. Ten years ago, when i used to hike this same area, there were never dogs. Now there always are. It makes me angry guys. It really does. Its like one more symptom of the negative changes Ive seen in this country since Ive been back. It's the indifference of the people, the dogs are just doing what comes natural to them. Hunting in packs.

Other than that, I carry food to cook, maybe a paperback book. Im looking into my bag, right now and there is a thing of tape at the bottom. I dont think, Ive ever used it though.

Nothin wrong with carrying something to take care of a bothersome mutt. Gonna have to look into some bear spray myself.

Yeah, the output of the bear spray is enormous, bigger than you expect, it just overwhelmes a dog. If you have any concerns with dogs, I would say it is worth the extra cost and weight than the standard little dog spray, you can buy.

I like to think too, that when the dog goes home, the owner gets a little taste of all that OC covering his "pet" and may begin to think about controlling the animal better. I noticed the dogs tails weren't corkscrewed so Im assuming they weren't feral dogs. The salt of the earth old timers that live where I hike always have their dogs on a chain or in a kennel. Its the new people that let their dogs run wild and drag down deer. Oh well.

Well, this is allways with me. Master Hunter in Carbon V, Becker BK7, Fiskars teloscopic saw and zippo and Inova T1. Usually a small folder of any type.

Im in the market for a new hatchet, the BK7 is nice, but it gets hard on the hand after alot of chopping. A hachet is just something I can use better. (had on as a kid before I had a knife) The blue pack inludes signaling, FAK's, cooking utensil's rope and various other goodies. The camera case houses my PSK which is with me every day, as well as the lighter knife and sak or multitool.

For general woods hiking
-SOG seal pup
-SOG flashII
-SUrefrie 6p
-waterproof matches
-camelbak

Fonly; what's the middle knife? It looks ace.

EDIT: I must learn to read. It's the BK7. Like you said. Just ignore me muttering to meself.

I forgot all about my camelbak, I used to always carry that with a first aid kit strapped to the back of it. I guess I'll have to drag that out of the closet and give it a good rinse. Those things are real useful and last a good while, I think I have the 2 liter pack, thanks for bringing it up dberry.
