Escape from NYC Bug-out Ebola Edition

i would be one to get out on the water. Seems to me its way less of a chance of getting into trouble. Just my two cents.

4 out of the 5 boroughs (think counties) that make up NYC proper are not part of mainland USA.
That means bridges and tunnels.
Choke points.
A bicycle will get you out of the city and into suburbia.
From Boston down to DC on the east coast is basically suburbia.
Last time I checked NJ was the most populous state in the union.

And the deadliest roads for a cyclist in jersey are all near the city. Of course you can go over the gwb and head due north o Harriman etc pretty fast. I was mainly just hatin on jersey because its good sport. ;-)

Joe, access to the water in NYC is easy. Maintaining access to something that FLOATS is very hard. Most residents will have none of: boat, garage, car, slip, mooring. Now if you could modify your bicycle to be amphibious you might be on to something. :-)

Why leave your house?

Lock your door
Do you really think the water will no longer be potable, then boil it or bleach it
Do you think the utilities will break down, then open canned food at home and eat cold, or cook on a camping stove

Bug out at home

Yes it is sport…
"Look! It's the light at the end of the tunnel"
"It's Jersey…"
;)

Just kidding Esav :D :D :D

Mooring on Long Island is around $100 a foot per month…

Paddling will only keep you in suburbia...

Well, he is at least prepared. A lot of interesting choices and conversation fodder in that video......
One thing I will ask: a sawyer water filter will not make sewer water potable will it? I am under the impression that you could filter the water then boil it and that would be pretty trustworthy. But I would need some pretty good and backed-up info before I drank non-reverse-osmosis filtered water from a New York or New Jersey sewer.

No, it will filter it, but you will still get sick. Cross contamination is the number one way of getting sick when feeling that warm fuzzy sense of false security. There is no substitute in this case for the modern marvel that is tap water. Besides, the amount of sodium OP is prepared to ingest with his food supply, I think he may want to consider the tap and stay home.

I'm thinking your chemical contaminations would be very, very high in any urban area. Plus some of those chemicals may cause a breakdown of the filter membrane. Petroleums are bad for that sort of thing. you would be better off with bathtub full of water.
But since flu season is more dangerous than an ebola outbreak, you'll get lots of practice if you evac every time the risk level goes up.

NYC tap water is actually among the cleanest in the country. The water comes from upstate. It's the old pipes in some of the pre-war buildings that gum it up here and there. The big problem is that the storm drains and sewers get linked up in every big storm.

NYC in a power outage isn't a ton of fun after the free ice-cream runs out. But water pressure usually sticks around. "Stay Home" might mean "Stay up 300 stairs and never leave your apartment". It sucks for emergency services when the elevators are out. Good news is people get ultra-friendly because they all of a sudden have something in common other than trying not to touch each other.

Fortunately, the problem seems to have solved itself:

Manhattan's water comes directly from the Catskills

I was in NYC in 75 for the blackout
that was a fine example of immediate breakdown of looting and riots

that was exactly stay at home and keep off the streets

Who needs clean water when we got the Gowanus Canal!

"the only waterway that's more guns than H2O."

I was in NYC for the 2003 Blackout. It was a festive block party.
It's not the same city it was in 1990 and before.

From Wikipedia:
"In New York City, six deaths were reported: Two from carbon monoxide, two from fire, one from a fall off a roof while breaking into a shoe store, and one from a heart attack after climbing stairs."

In a city of 8 million, that's not bad for 3 days. I bet major rainstorms claim more.

9/11 was a different story. Stuck on the island, LES for 2 weeks, luckily a buddy had a rooftop. We were told we'd be back NJ/PA bound in 72 hours. Just sayin.

true enough.
I didn't get home to B'klyn until late October 'cause I was out in the Middle East for work. Ship was flagged out of New York and you can imagine things didn't exactly go as planned there either (and then some). But that's a different prepping scenario for beer-fueled story time...
