Esee 3 for 5-day hike?

I carry exclusive my ESEE 3 & Lite machete & a SAK Rucksack .
the 3 is a fantastic knife if it fits your hands ,if not I'd step up to the 4
the ESEE5 has a saber grind and was not design to be a primary camp blade

yes, a small axe or any sak with a saw, or any folding saw for that matter, with that ESEE 3 will make a great combo for any 5 day hike

I typically carry way too many knives when I hike, even though I know I'll do just fine with a small one. I don't baton, so the heaviest I use a knife is to bend over a 2-year old tree and press the blade into the bend to cut it down if I need a green-wood pole for some reason. I say a RC-3 is a perfect size knife for a 5-day hike! If you're planning on having fires every night, I'd say bring an axe. If you're not planning on having fires, then an axe is a ton of extra weight.

Survival is about what's in your head. It's not as big of deal as people make it (still today many humans live 100% outdoors) and a big knife isn't going to help you anymore than a small knife... I'm sure I'm going to catch flack for this statement, but I feel the whole "survival gig" is highly overrated, especially the survival knife. Artic survival gear is real, I don't really see how in normal climates your survival gear should differ from the hiking gear you carry on your back. If it serves you well for 5-days, it'll do the same for 10 or 20 days unless you carry a biodegradable tent.

I feel the exact same way.

I carry a Browning folding saw to prep fire wood. Its lighter than an axe and works great. I don't baton with my knives and think a 4 - 4 1/2 inch fixed blade is the perfect companion.

That's very similar to what I carry - only I usually have a mini-multi-tool or full-sized multi-tool with me (plyers can be used to fix lots of things on a back-packer's tent, trekking poles, and back-packer stoves).

I'm a two-knives-at-a-time kind of person, so it was the izula and the 4 for me. I took those two on an extended cross country trip. They saw lots of use and served me well. That being said, I think the 3 by itself would do a fine job. Long enough and tough enough for most bush chores, but thin enough to be a great slicer and lightweight knife. I think the 5 is overkill for backpacking.

If the 3 will be the only knife you are bringing with you and you arnt planning on taking an axe/saw with you, then I would suggest going with something larger like the 6. However if the 3 is the only blade you have then just be careful when splitting wood. Dont thrash on it too hard.

lol, oke, back to english :)
For the ardennes forest, the esee 3 will be great.
"The great outdoors" where you actually might need a big survival chopping blade is not anywhere in our neighborhood :)
The ardennes is cool to go to, I've been there a lot and will go there next week :)
Sweden, you can do with the esee 3, but a larger blade will be much nicer with all the things you can do there, fire and shelter building etc.

have fun!

I'll respectfully disagree with this statement. If an ESEE 3 doesn't fit your hands, how can the ESEE 4 fit better? Dimensionally the handles are identical except the 1/16" difference in thickness provided by the blade of the 4. Length and shape are exactly the same. The scales are even interchangeable. If one doesn't feel right, I don't see that 1/16" in thickness making the difference. It certainly didn't when I handled them.
