Esee 4 Aftermarket Scales Discussion

Not always. It's just that I know what all phenolic material behaves like. That's all.

Hell, maybe your diamond won't cut glass either. Who knows.

I still consider you a buddy, I just disagree. No worries man - enjoy your new scales. I'm just telling you that you shouldn't worry about it so much.

Apparently, my phenolic material behaves like a little bi**h.:D

Or maybe I just had superman's toothbrush? :D

But thank you, I definitely cant wait till the new scales arrive! These look like they are gonna turn out great:thumbup:

Absolutely! I think they're stunning man! I think it'll change the whole look of the knife - really set it apart from the rest!

Hey guys, the scales just came it.....

I like how they look and feel......

But, the fit isnt the best and they dont line up all that great. Not sure why

I also dont really love the addition of the part that covers the pommel. I think it kinda makes the knife look a little off.

But all in all, I think I like them. The looks are definitely upgraded, and they feel great in hand. Plus the difference in the end allows for better chopping ability, which is definitely a plus. Cant wait to test them out

Wow, gotta be honest, I'd be sending those back. That is really poor fitment. I understand wanting your new stuff to be in-hand and in-use, but yeah, one of those scales is clearly poorly cut/shaped. This is your baby! At the moolah those undoubtedly ran you, they should fit right. Just my take on it. LOVE the color though.

Yeah that was my first thought too..... But dammit, I just dont wanna send them back! :D I think the issues are still acceptable to me, especially with the intended uses of the knife in mind, and Im even thinking about removing some material in the back to make it more closely resemble the original scale shape, so the issue with the fit and finish would also go away. Im just kinda scared to take the dremel to these beautiful babies.......:(

Oh and these werent that expensive either. I think I paid somewhere in the mid-forties for them, so its definitely not too bad. If I had paid substantially more, then heck yes I would wanna return them.

Have you tried loosening the screws, lining everything up, holding the scales in place (with your hands or a clamp), and tightening the screws slowly so everything lines up? Definitely worth a shot. Some things are just like this. Some things have alignment issues unless you try it that way.

If you try that and it still doesn't fit, I'd send em back. I'd send em pics of the way they don't line up. Maybe they'd even ship you out a new set while your pair is going back to them.

I think they are dead sexy, but I like scales to at least come pretty close to lining up flush with the tang.

I remember that used to be an ongoing thing with busse knives back on the day. Almost all the ones I have seen were close enough that I wouldn't have worried about them, but people would complain and send their knives in. They would come back with a polished spine all the way around and the handles absolutely flush all the way around.

If I were you I would not take a dremel to them. I'd have the company (knife connection I assume?) make it right.

S**t AntDog, youre right again! I just had to mess around with the positioning a bit, and they are now PERFECT:thumbup: I was always under the impression that they only fit one way..... Thanks for the tip man! So much better now. I might post some more pics tomorrow when its light out.

Awesome! You are very welcome! I'm so glad it worked for you man. That sure beats sending those brand new sexy scales back!

I have been around the block a time or two my friend! I've had to do that exact technique with LOTS of things.

I ride a Harley daily and tons of their stuff is like that: loose fit the part, then alternate screws tightening everything up until it looks right. Now that you know that little mechanics hint, pass it on.

I recently got some orange scales from TKC for my "4", they make it a whole different knife!

Agreed. It feels way different now. Oh and nice scales! I like the orange

And relax guys, I'll be posting pics later today of mine in action, and I'll throw in a couple of shots that show the fixed areas:)

Isn't she beautiful? :)

Scales are all lined up perfectly now....

Testing:

Held up to batonning well, except that i hadnt tightened down the scales enough at first, making them come loose while I was working. But once I tightened them up, they stayed tight and worked great.

I love the looks now, and it feels much better in hand over long periods of use.

Gooooorgeous! Looks great man! I love the colors and the contours. Also great to see you're not scared to go beat it up a little!

Hey, if they keep coming loose, squirt some loctite on the bolt threads. They won't come off unless you want em off. Make sure you do NOT use the red loctite, or they will be on there for good...pretty much.

Thanks man. Im actually impressed with their performance so far. And its cool that as the scales get some use, the grey parts start looking more like tan, which is great because they match the color scheme of the knife a lot better:thumbup:

Krissig, I know it's a stretch you might still see this post but I'm wondering (hoping)...did you hang onto the old Desert Tan scales for your ESEE-4? Feel free to email me a note if you do catch this post to let me know.

Thank you,

Dutch S.
