Esee 4 or 5?

Have not handled the 5 but I just got a 4 and love it. Great size and heft, and is beefy but not obtrusively so.

After watching some videos of the different colors; I decided to go with the black model. Its just too cool!

I carry the black Izula as my EDC and love it. The ESEE-4 is my second favorite. When I go camping and head into the mountains they are always with me and work very well together.

Well got a 4 on the way (1st ESEE) and next will prob be the izula. Been reading so much positive info on the 4 I thought it would be the best bet for a first ESEE.

FWIW, I have both an ESEE-4 and a F1.

They're very different knives. The F1 is more of a comparison size-wise to an ESEE-3 I think.

The 4 has quite a bit more blade and heft. If you are considering 4's and 5's I think rather than an F1 you should maybe consider an S1. The F1 is an incredible knife, I just don't think of it and the ESEE-4 in the same vein.

The 4 is awesome though. You can't go wrong there.

Just as a point of fact, the F1 is listed having a 0.18" thick blade, with the ESEE-4 having a 3/16" thick blade (0.1875"). Lengthwise, the F1 is certainly more like the -3, though.

Having an S1 myself, though, with its 0.20" thick blade, it feels heavier than the ESEE-4. It's almost like, in order of heft, the lineup is ESEE-3, F1, ESEE-4, S1. JMO.

Yeah, you are right on that. The F1 is pure awesomeness in its own right. I just hold the two in hand and to me they're sooooo different that I don't look at one as an alternative to the other.

Someday I will have an S1 though...

The 4 is the best survival knife of the ESSE line. I always have the 4 and the Izula when I am going hunting.

Which is why I'm picking up an Izula (or two), and the ESEE-4.

Another vote for the RC-4/ESEE4 over the 5. As already mentioned, the 5 is more an all out "SHTF I need one knife to do it all" kind of blade.
Here's a pic for size comparison.
