ESEE 4 vs. Becker BK16

As mentioned..BK 16 or Esee 4 are both great knives--You can't go wrong with either.
If I could only have one, it would be the Esee.

Is it bad form to post on a 2 year old thread? I'm sure someone will politely let me know.
I see Becker and ESEE as functionally equal (pluses and minuses both ways, depends on what you want). But, as said, price is a huge factor with some buyers.
I personally try not to spend any more than a days wage (I don't make a ton of money) on any knife, flashlight, or watch or anything like that. I'd love to own a $200+ knife but I can't justify it, when I use and carry my knives I'm kind of hard in them and I can sometimes lose them. I much prefer the idea of my BK16 dropping out of the canoe or getting otherwise lost vs. a $100+ kinfe.

The BK16 has done everything I've asked it to. I'm sure an ESEE 4 or something similar would too. I'm sure a $200 knife would serve me flawlessly, but I'd rather buy 3 or 4 less spendy knives. And I do appreciate fine craftsmanship, I'm actually a craftsman, I love seeing beautiful work. I will probably buy an ESEE one day. I don't really count my Eskabar, although maybe I should. (I LOVE my BK14, goes everywhere with me!)
But for my needs right now, spending more on an ESEE or something that is, for my personal needs, functionally identical to a $60-$70 option (and they both sink out of sight just as fast:() doesn't work for me.

I'm the same way with sunglasses, I don't spend more than $15 because I kneel or sit on them or lose them about every 4-6 months:cool:.

That is a good way to look at things generally. Don't over spend for what you don't need.

That said, to get the same materials esee gives you, the upgraded cost on a Becker tweener would cost just as much or more than an esee (micarta handles, and upgraded sheath). There is no free lunch. I loved my 15 when I had it and now wish I had never sold it (they've doubled in price since being discontinued), but I knew i would have had to sink another $60-$80 into it to make it a functional tool on par with my other knives.
