Looking for a super tough camping and hiking knife and have pretty much narrowed it down to these two knives. I know for sure i cant go wrong either way from what i have read on these. Im leaning toward the becker due to cost and its literally tank proof, however i do like the fact the esee is a good bit lighter in weight and i can get it in orange which is a plus for me.

Ok guys help me out here im stuck between a rock and a hard place. Normally i would do the smart thing and simply buy them both however current funds wont allow so help me out here fellas.

is the 16 just as tough as the 2
the tank built status of the 2 is why i was considering it to begin with

then what makes you consider the esee 4? Color and weight?

Youre comparing two very different knives. What will its main uses be?

The bk2 is a monster compared to the 4. I own both and I rarely use the 2. It's heavy and I don't need to baton through a car. I'm going to pick up a bk16 ffg when they come out.

There really is no comparison between the BK2 and the RC4. Apples and oranges. Get a BK16. I have all three and the 16 has quickly become my go to woods knife.

I agree with the others, they are very different knives.

What exactly do you want this knife to do? For long distance hiking, The BK2 wouldn't be my choice, but for a BOB type thing it is for sure one of the blades I would be taking, simply because it inspires so much confidence in itself. I carry mine scout style, or drop leg usually, and it doesn't get in the way at all, but you do for sure notice it.

The BK16 would be much more similar to the ESEE 4. Of those two though, the BK16 is actually slightly thinner, and longer than the ESEE 4 , so once again its all about what exactly you're looking for in the knife.

Good luck :).

ESEE 5 and BK2 are similar. ESEE 4 and BK 16 are similar. ESEE 4 and BK2 are apples and oranges.

Anyway, I carry my BK2 lots while hiking / camping / doing off-season scouting. It's a tank and I love it.

You probably have already considered this, but what about an esee5 , it would definitely be a decent compromise.If weight is a big issue go with the esee4

This is the rundown on the specs:
esee4 = 7.4 oz. ,blade 4.5", oal 9.0"
esee5 = 20 oz, blade 5.25", oal 10.88"
bk16 =6.4 oz., blade 4.37" , oal 9.25"
bk2 =20 oz , blade 5.25", oal 10.5"

The BK2 is bombproof and makes a super camp and outdoors knife. Pry,chop,cut, mod it any way you want. Its a great knife, also take a look at the scrapyard 511. Get a nice kydex sheath and strap it on your belt. Dont let the weight weenies get to ya. We are talking 7-10oz difference, if you need to worry bout carrying the exta 7 ounces, ya might not want to be taking your chances outdoors anyways.;)...

When do the BK16's come out? I like the looks of that one even better than the BK2.

I prefer the esee 4. Like everyone else said, an esee 5 would be a better comparison to the bk2. They come down to user preference. I tried both the bk2 and esee 5 and went with the esee 5. Better fit for my needs.

I have the E4 and the BK2. I like them both but prefer the 4 with its smaller size and weight, particularly if a full canteen is on the same belt. I did the same thing with a Brute for a few years, and learned that weight does matter.

I love my ESEE 4. I dont do much batoning here in the desert so the 4 is a perfect sized hiking/camp knife.

I just bought a BK-16 here tonight so i'll get to see first hand how it compares.

I am looking forward to the general release of the FFG BK-16 with great anticipation. :thumbup:

Are you counting weight of the sheath as well?

If not, then I think you have the information for the old BK2 that was missing the hollowed out tang under the handle and the pomel extension. The Becker blade database puts the BK2 at 13.34oz. That might be without scales, but even with scales, you're going to be way under 20oz. More like 16oz.

I also thought that I would point out that while the ESEE 4 has a longer blade than the BK16, the choil eats up the cutting edge, so the cutting edge on the ESEE 4 is actually smaller (just over 4in IIRC) than the BK16.

When it comes down to it though, you can't go wrong with any of those choices, as they're all quality blades :D.

I absolutely love the Esee 4 but my confidence inspiring bomb proof go to is the ESEE 5 unless weight is a consideration. I really like Becker but love Esee!
