ESEE 5 coating wearing off after first use?

Hi, I'm new to the forum, and I just purchased an ESEE 5. I love it. The thing is, after chopping through a bit of tougher wood on day 1, it seems the rough powder coat has worn off and smoothed out on parts of the blade. I don't want to sound dumb if this is how it is, but I'm new to powder coated blades and I was curious if this happens to everyone else's ESSE.
Any thoughts/comments are gladly appreciated

It does wear pretty easy, to get all the way to bare steel means you probably did a little more than a bit of chopping. Just make sure to keep any exposed steel covered with a little oil to prevent rust.

It may have just been a costing that didn't quite stick. It happens with coated blades sometimes.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I'm not new to knives in general, just to coated 1095, so that's why I was thinking I might have been coming off as stupid to ask that question. I'll be sure to oil it after use to keep rust away, thanks for that tip. Excellent knife, by the way, haha.

yep. batoning and chopping will wear on the coating. Ive batoned with mine several times and it has only smoothed the coating. no actually coating missing yet.

You could also look at getting it recoated. You can buy DIY kits, and send it to places that do it.

Imo just rub it down with an oily rag after each use, then try to wear it out before you die.

That's what had happened with mine, Buckles. It smoothed it down, so no steel is exposed. Thanks for the suggestion about recoating, Cold Kill. I might look into that one day after I put more use into it.

I actually just heard about recoating a knife last week, so this came up with pretty good timing.

you wont need to recoat it. there are people that have used ESEEs more than me and you probably ever will, and they have no problems. Just keep it oiled up and use it as hard as you can.

strip it, rub it down with denatured alcohol, then patina it by laying it down on grapefruit slices/covering it with grapefruit slices for about 45min or so, wash it off with windex, let it dry, and give it a light coat of oil. From that point on it wont rust unless you totally neglect it, and will slice/chop/baton like a mad man. Not to mention look cool as all get out.

I prefer no coatings on my 1095 anyways, so unless its looks are a problem, i wouldnt worry.

Humm.....the coating that ESEE uses is tough stuff. I would say that Cerakote is about on par with the coatings that ESEE uses perhaps a little less durable. The advantage of Cerakote is that it is thinner coating and comes in a bunch of different colors. Also I can do patterns, camo, stencils and other things that can't be done with the powder coating.

Why?

Used knives look cooler. I never understood why people go through the trouble to research & buy "hard use" knives and then stress after they start looking worn.
