For those of you that own the ESEE 5 - did you get serrated or plain edge and why?

I got serrated, because my other knives aren't. I like the option. I think most people will prefer the plain edge for sharpening reasons. Although I have a small serration sharpener I don't mind using if I need to.

plain edge, I'm just not a serrated fan......I've thought about getting it on the 6 when I get it, who knows!!!!!

I got the plain edge because when I buy a 5 inch blade I want all 5 inches of cutting space. I'm also not a fan of serrations at all either.

Some people found a use for them, some didn't. I think I can accomplish anything within reason with just the plain edge, though. It really just boils down to what YOU want.

I got the plain edge. I had bad experiences with a fine serrated blade (a tooth broke out) and I don't think I really need serrations on my 5. But I do think that the ESEE serrations are great. In my opinion that's the way serrations should be designed for a robust "survival" knife.

I'm a plain fan here, the bit of blade closest to the handle is prime real estate for the majority of my knife uses.

I would imagine serrations would be great for cutting rope, carpet, cardboard boxes, etc.

Plain. I feel that, if it's kept sharp, a plain edge can do anything a serrated edge can, but it doesn't work the other way 'round.

I ordered the plain edge because IMO, serrations are more of a hassle than what they are worth. (but then again, i haven't had experience with esee serrations before)

I use my 5 primarily in the outdoors. I find a plain edge to be what I prefer for outdoors tasks. Easy, to sharpen, clean, and detail carving. Most of my detail cutting work is done right where the serrations would be, so that would cause me to use the edge further up the blade. The further up the blade you go away from your hand, the less control I get and I am more easily fatigued. (allthough carving with the 5 for any extended time will fatigue me anyway..)

I know allot of guys and gals like to keep their 5 in their vehicles or in their BOB's. If that was me I would probably go serrated.

I got PE because I do not like serrations and know how to make them myself if I ever want to try.

Prior to re-profiling mine, I installed a single serration for use with my fire steel, but really did not like even one, so I removed it.

It is a personal preference thing, but if you get PE, you can always install serrations (as many or as few as you like, and where you like).

I got mine with serrations. I've always liked a partially serrated blade because it gives me options when dealing with a tough, fibrous material. Nearly all of my general-purpose outdoors knives (fixed-blades anyways) have partially serrated blades. The exceptions are knives for skinning and dressing game.

Plain edge. I generally don't care much for serrations. Though ESEE serrations are more useful than most. My pig skinning RC-3 is my only serrated ESEE, it's handy but it would likely work just as well without.

I was lucky enough to get picked to keep the Pass Around ESEE-5. It started out life as a combo edge but was uh, sharpened and they were pretty much removed. If you maintain the original original edge angle the serrations should last a long time.

Check here for my review and close up pics of the serrations. If I were to ever buy a serrated knife, it would be an ESEE. I’m generally a plain edge guy though.

Plain edge for me. Most all my knives are plain edge. Just don't like serrated, they can be a real pain to sharpen and I've never found serrations to be useful to me.
