ESEE 5 Owners

Plain edge on mine... if I knew then what I know now, I might have bought a serrated edge - the ESEE serrations are da bomb.

I was part of the passaround and didn't care for the serrations so bought a plain edge. Personal preference.

Love serrations. Easy to sharpen with the right too and help a bunch for hacking and slicing through certain things. I skinned a quarters a whole elk one time with a small fully serrated Spyderco (don't remember the model) and it worked much better than a plain edge.

I went with the plaine edge, but military users may prefer the serrated edge for slashing rope and straps.

Plain, im not a fan of serations, there a pain to sharpen even though esee's look like they wouldnt be that hard to sharpen.

Well IMO if you are going to be cutting down boxes and using the 5 as an EDC than it would probably be good to get the serrations, otherwise I like plain edge because for one it's easier to sharpen and 2 serrations are for saws, IMHO of course

My ESEE 5 has serrations. Most of my woods/utility knives have them. I like a partially serrated blade because serrations are more effective in cutting some kinds of material. For me it's a matter of making a knife as flexible and useful as possible.

Look at ALL your steak knives folks. They have serrations for a reason. The small amount of serrations can be very useful and seldom get in the way.

Wait. Who uses a steak knife? I use my EDC, which is a plain edge.. and it works far better then any steak knife I own.

Sometimes. But I have to say, years ago I skinned and quartered a whole elk with a fully serrated blade and it worked extremely well.

Maybe it's just me, but I would never use my EDC for cutting up a steak. Not with all the nasty sh#t I use it for. I guess if a guy never uses his EDC or just uses it to cut up boxes or open boxes or whatever, it would be fine. But I prefer a dedicated steak knife for my steak.:D

Serrations are very useful. They're nothing to be afraid of. I would be happy with either I guess. But I have the plain edge and it's just fine.

I didn't think I would like serrations either at first, but after experience with them, they have their place and can be used anywhere.

I do have to throw out there though, that I do use all my EDC for attacking the dinner plate once in a while. My kids crack up when I'm digging into the mashed tatters with my ESEE 5!
