ESEE Avispa

Nice review, thanks for the pictures man. I like that...but I'm still trying to hold out for something I got a glimpse of at Blade :)

Holding both, I can't tell any real difference, the Avispa might be a tad lighter because it has one less nylon 6 scale and the liner is nested into the scale, where the RAT has to full steel liners.

Only having one nylon scale, it's thinner than the RAT one by a good 1/8th inch

Yes, the checkering is deeper and wider than the RAT-1

Thanks for the detailed reply.

Received mine today, very happy with the Knifeworks, lightning fast shipping, great knife, great size, love the color of the scale, excellent fit and finish,
perfectly centered blade, smooth opening, positive early lock-up...

It must be too good to be truth, right...?

Well, if you thought that, you are correct... Take a good look at the picture above and tell me if the clip should lay directly on the lock's spring...
The knife came with tip-down clip, when I switch it for tip-up carry, I found out that someone didn't do the math correctly and by pressing on the spring,
it's almost impossible to open the knife and close it with one hand...

I loosen the screws and repositioned little bit the clip, did tight the screws again and it was supported on the frame, probably with half a millimeter...
It's still there but it shouldn't be that way and I'm not happy... I absolutely love the knife but I cannot imagine I'll use it that way, I hope this is not a common problem with those,
if it is, they probably should come up with wider clip, so when you switch from tip-up to tip-down it will be supported firmly on the frame...
This is how it looks like now...

Just bought the knife. Yea tip up its not a prob (comes like this) but tip down and it sits on the framelock.

Don't post here much but I have to agree that they botched it on the clip on this one. I prefer tip up carry and it really is not useable with the frame lock supporting the clip, pretty much a deal breaker for me.

I attached my clip in this configuration before going lefty with it and didn't have any issues. I think y'all need to using one of those grip stengtheners or something! Lol!

But seriously, although I didn't have any issues, this certainly doesn't seem like the ideal position for the pocket clip.

Just to make sure I was not loosing my mind, I went ahead and switched it back to tip up carry and it is definitely not doable. Diesel mechanic for the past 25 years so somehow I don't think that grip strength is the issue here. I will have to either drill and tap it to reposition the clip or, more than likely, toss it into the drawer with the other cheap Chinese knives that did not work out. Too bad really as it is a fairly decent knife in most other aspects. The adage you get what you pay for really comes to mind here.

I flipped mine and noticed it was on the lock bar as well, but was able to position it slightly over where it barely catches on the frame also, so it doesn't seem to be an issue.

I am blown away by the quality at this price. Aus8 is really a working steel. I bought one for my son and another for a friend. My son used his last night to ma some fuzz sticks around the fire Pitt. He is a devote Emerson fan but I believe he was impressed. He said Taiwan really did an excellent job.

Just read the posts above. We switch the clip to tip up at blade HQ. Neither my son (age 15) nor I had a problem with it.

I don't believe they made this by purpose... It doesn't make sense to me at al... When clip is moved for tip-up carry, it naturally falls completely on the spring, doubling the pushing force.
I have a really hard time opening the knife one handed, closing it for me is almost impossible if I don't use both hands.

This is how it looks like before I loosen up the screws and reposition it so it barely supports itself on the frame, it doesn't touches the frame at all:

When I reposition it, it looks like it is on the bottom picture of my previous post.
There are no knives that I know that would have the clip directly pushing on the spring.
One millimeter wider clip, on both sites, will solve the problem instantly. I hope this is not the case with all the knifes released because it will be real turn off for some.
It is a great knife IMHO, I wish they release a different clip to fix this issue, I would even purchase it because I like a lot the shape of the original,
otherwise I would have to look for aftermarket clip in order to use the knife without worrying that I would not be able to open it one-handed when I need it...

I have the new Avispa and mine is the same way. When positioned for tip-up carry, the clip is resting fully on the lock bar. However, I really don't mind this. I'm still able to fairly smoothly open the knife one-handed (albeit needing a bit more force to do so) and I actually don't mind the clip pressing on the lock bar when the knife is open. In my opinion, it gives that blade a good, solid lock-up. And, if I need two hands to close it - one to pull/push the lock bar back over and one to slowly close the blade - so be it. I'd rather have to use both my hands to close it than to have it close up on my one hand accidentally in use. With the clip bar pressing on that lock bar with the knife in the open position, I think it would take some pretty major force to close that blade up on your hand in use. Overall, I like the knife. It feels good in my hand and - while it's not a smooth and easy one-hand open - it is openable with one hand and feels like a good, solid knife. At least mine does. :-)
