ESEE Fire Kit users

Ok, I'm confused (what else is new) I just ordered two of the rods linked below from goinggear.

http://goinggear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4&products_id=7

They are listed a misch metal ferro rods. I thought ferrocerium and misch metal were two different things????

I want gobs of molten metal that burns for days:D

Did I order the correct rods?

Anyone know what thread size the misch metal rods use in the firekits?

those will toss gobs of hot molten metal :D when you get good at it.. i have a few from them. i just ordered 3 3inch misch rods for my altoids firekits.

I pack a bic into every trip - the little tiny one. mine is in my ditch kit (on my person.)

BUT...moving parts...murphy's law...the bic is easy and worth it's space in any pack...
but if you can't get a fire going with a steel...it's a "fuel" problem -
by enviroment or operator choices made - that is at fault.

The steels are going to work in snow/ice/after a dunking/ minus 50 or 120 degrees...I carry no less than 2 on every trip. one in the bag, one around my neck.

firesteels.com stuff is awesome, but I'll prob. get an ESEE at some point.

Actually I think they are all ferrocerium, and all mischmetal....they just had to come up with a way to differentiate between the two styles....and there are variations of each.

I will never again buy another F.S. dot com firesteel. The ones I have are the most inconsistent ferro rods I've ever used, and the attitude of the owner during the subsequent conversation just completely turned me off of their products all together. For my misch rods I'll always go to going gear now.

geez, sorry mist that you had the trouble! that's rotten.

mine are at least a couple years old. maybe better quality control? They work great for me, but since I'm all about supporting ESEE now, that's who will get the next buys from me.

I have 2 of the misch metal versions. They work great. The are awesome little tools. With that said, they are a little bulky (because you can store tinder in the handle which is great). If nothing else, an ESEE Fire Kit is a great way to store tinder and have a backup fire method if your lighter doesn't work.

that is correct rod....factory rod was 3/8" x 2"-2.5" I think ?

The rod you ordered will look like this afterwards(same rod) close to the pink screaming eagle Izula !

one of my Fire kits with the 4" rod....(I have a pair)
I was piddling around fell and broke the rod.
1/8" from handle, no biggy .. still usable in the field while still out and about but got home to re-drill & tapped it, had to hack saw the broken end... took a while to saw thru a misch rod makes ALOT of sparks/blobs of molten fire using a hacksaw....once done good as new just 1/4" shorter

This always confuses people. Its like trying to define "plastic".

GoingGear said:
These firesteels are made out of ferrocerium, a combination of misch metal, iron, and magnesium. Misch metal is an alloy of rare earth metals

Ferrocerium is an alloy
Misch Metal is an alloy
Both alloys contain different ratios of various metals.
These ratios vary from maker to maker helping to complicate the confusion.
In general terms ferrocerium is the alloy that typically creates lots of hot sparks and misch metal makes the gobs of burning metal.
There is no defined ratio that really differentiates these.
As GoingGear indicates their alloy is a mix of the two alloys.
The older RAT firesteels was a mix like this although it seems like their alloy had even more misch metal than GGs. Basically they all work but with varying results, find what you like and stock up!

I have mentioned in other posts that one thing to consider is fine motor skills (or the lack of them) in survival situations. There are like three models that I recommend because of the ease of use when motor skills are suffering.
These three all have large handles that are easy to hold even when soaking wet and shivering in cold temps.

Tony, what size tap do I need? I work for a machine tool dealer and would like to grab a tap before I head home for the weekend.

Are the RAT SERE handles still available anywhere or have they all benn replaced by the ESEE ones?

SERE are long long gone. The RAT Cutlery ESEE are probably also all gone.

I'm almost sorry I ever posted the video of the old kits. :) I'm going to make a new one shooting globs off the ferro rods...
