I have learned that finding this in my mailbox or on my doorstep means it's going to be a good day. Over the last several months about a dozen of my happiest days have involved one of these.

I've been extremely happy with all previous experiences with that label.

After learning that they do have a few of these in stock... so far today is no exception!

It was a pleasant surprise to find the button compass is now supplied...IIRC the first ones didn't.

I really like how ESEE actually takes the opportunity to go above and beyond to make this product a better tool for the end user. They give it a great ergonomic shape that's easy to keep a grip on under less than perfect conditions, a water-tight storage compartment for tinder and other small items, and they even give the user some useful information to read and go by at a time when they may be stressed out and not thinking too clearly.

I like it much better than the ones I've tried that are put out by some other companies who simply engrave a huge logo on the side of a slick aluminum tube while claiming that their "foremost goal "is to help you to survive in the wilderness. Personally, after having bad experiences with a couple of their ferro rods I suspect they are much more interested in making money...but then that is just my opinion. I am thinking this ESEE fire starter is going to be my favorite of all the "full-sized" "user" systems currently available on the market. If it works anywhere near as good as it looks I know it will be. I plan to get it out in the woods this weekend and try it out, and I can't wait.

.

Is that one with the ferro rod or the misch metal?

I really dig the ESEE firestarters, kinda pricey, but maybe soon I'll pony up the cash for one.

like the idea of having room for tinder, button compass is a plus too :)

does it come w/ a striker (or is the top a striker?)- most (all??) of their knives are coated aren't they?

+1

I don't know why they don't just make a choil to fit the striker so you don't have to use your blade. Seems it would be easy to design in.

Because it's intended as a true last-ditch tool. If you need a fire NOW you won't care so much if a tiny bit of your edge gets dulled.

very cool.

wait until you see what i'm machining on the lathe..... :)

I really like it.

That sounds interesting

You lucky dog lol. That looks like a

neat firestarter and capsule.

Bryan

This thing is really cool.

I really need to stop reading your

threads now I want a firesteel and a hest :(

Ya not alone !:(

Yeah, I did too :)

Looks like a good firesteel to me.

It really throw some sparks!

It's the harder type more like the Strike Force, and the LMF

firesteels.

Not as high as some that bring less to the table.

I like the compass a lot. Yeah the blades are all coated...but

the edge works just fine :)

Awesome, I like that. A few PJCB's in

that puppy and you are good to go.

I trying to get a little more than just fire in it but I may be

able to fit a small fire straw in it too.

I don't know why they don't just

make a choil to fit the striker so you don't have to use your

blade. Seems it would be easy to design in.

Once you're familiar with a ferro it doesn't take many strikes to

ignite tinder. With a knife with a good temper and heat treat like the ESEE knives the effect of using the edge to spark a rod to start a fire is less than nominal. With the short blade length of the Izula I'd much rather risk a nominal dulling on a minute area of the edge than lose enough edge to make a choil. As for the ESEE 3,4... and some others I think, the choil is plenty large enough to work as a striker.,,,it's just coated.

Exactly

:)

I've been seeing what all I can get in it. So far I've got a piece of fatwood enough to use for tinder for a few fires under dry conditions (in which case I most likely wouldn't need to use it) and one fire for sure under wet conditions maybe two. I've also got a small capsule with some fish hood and split shot and I have room for fishing line.

I think there is room for some ibuprofen and pseudoephedrine with as much pollen as there is in the air here right not that could be a really good thing. The truck was just washed and waxed two days ago.

Neat score mistwalker!
I scored one of these unused on ebay just before Christmas.
Actually it was the Rat Firestarter plus a Rat-1 Combo-edge folder (both mint/unused) for the new price of a new Rat-1 folder.
Already had a plain edge Rat-1 so i traded the combo edge Rat-1 to a buddy for a CS Trailhawk.
My Firestarter is an old one with the Rat logo and the misch metal rod. Also the compass is different, a Brunton with only the 4 compass points marked, no gradations.

Nice mistwalker! I've got 2 of them and really like them. Very well made piece of kit.

The compass on this one is unmarked...at least on top anyway. The rod is definitely not the softer mischmetal type.

Thanks, it seems a very solid piece of kit, I really like that.

GOOD! i cant stand that soft firesteel stuff, i go thru one in no time. I can get GREAT sparks from the harder ferro rods, and they last longer.

I do like a softer mischmetal rod with certain tinders under wet conditions because they can serve as an initial tinder themselves....but I prefer the harder type most of the time. They do last longer that's for sure.
