ESEE Fire Starter Came Today Yaaaaaay!!

It seems that a blend of elements from this firestarter and the ExoTac would be ideal. Since you have both, could you put them in a drawer for a while and maybe play some Barry White? :D

agreed- a slim-ish Exotac w/ a small container for a couple of tinder tabs (or the like) would be ideal IMO

Barry White just might do the trick! :D

Couldn't you drill out the stub of firesteel once it gets too small to use and epoxy another one in its place? With it stuck in a vise on a drill press table, it wouldn't be too hard to do.

You'd probably need to douse it in water so the drill doesn't send a shower of sparks all over your shop. An assistant with a spray bottle might do the trick.

Something extremely pocketable, that would be good for one or two fires in horrible conditions. I think it would be ideal also, for me at least. Not to derail the thread, but Exotac has a sweet little matchsafe out now.

Not being able to replace the firesteel is complete and utter bollocks. Basically your left with a nice piece of aluminum tube with a stub of firesteel stuck in it.

I had planned to buy about ten of these for my various kits, and to use as zipper pulls on my bags, but if i cannot replace the firesteel when i need to, FORGET IT.

^
( no offense to anyone, its just my opinion )

I go thru a lot of firesteels, demonstrating the technique to people, using it myself, a basic Scout firesteel lasts me a weekend or two.

Like you I mean no offense...but if you can go through an LMF Scout model in a weekend then there is a chance you need to adjust your technique...or perhaps you are just addicted to the pretty sparks and use them for entertainment :D

I've had the LMF Army model in my pack for two years. I have done some serious studies in ignition of various tinders and possible tinders, I've done classes on fire starting, and used it in the reviews of many knives. I'd say it was safe to say I've started six to seven hundred fires of varying sizes and I still have half of the fire steel to go.

I'm going to be using this ESEE fire starter in classes and buy a few more for my personal use and my packs. I don't anticipate needing to buy another for at least a year if I'm pretty busy. If you are going through that many ferro rods that quickly teaching then perhaps you should be getting compensated enough to buy more rods....then you won't mind replacing them :)

I'll say it again: BEST.REVIEWS.EVER.

Loved the BK7 revisited as well (Just got a 7! Great knife)

Thanks T.E. glad you like the reviews!

Yeah, the BK7 is a great knife. Nice tip, comfortable handle, really tough, really good steel

Nice review, as usual, Brian.

I have not personally seen or handled this item so I'm going only on pictures I've seen. While the size of the "capsule" portion must be welcome as a comfortable handle and tinder compartment, it seems too big for pocket or neck carry. Also, it appears to be too bulbous to attach a knife sheath. I'm curious how people carry this firestarter.

Do you guys carry it inside a pouch? Any other ideas?

Thanks John, glad yo liked the review.

It's not bad for neck carry alone...could be a bit heavy for some with a knife though. Wouldn't be too bulbous on a larger knife sheath I think. I'll be carrying mine in a pouch or my pack in the warmer months...it's in my cargo pocket right now though.

As for your other idea...I'm already working on it...hadn't really considered that approach though ...hmmmm.

Yes ,
If you wear out the Firekit and wanna toss it in the trash to buy a New one I'll give ya $5 for the RC/ESEE fire kit body as an option :D

I have no idea what this is, I just liked the lighting and balance of the shot...

I am pretty sure that is Milkweed.

Mist, i'm using a carbide scraper, it makes a MASSIVE shower of sparks. But it also wears em more quickly. Plus i light the bbq, the tobacco pipe, candles (using a bit of cottonball on the wick) as well as woods use, fire practice, etcetcetc.

sure i could just use matches or a bic, but where is the fun in that? ;)

I know they're fun and all but d@mn that's a lot of sparing...you know they can't last forever. Get the ESEE for your pack and then a couple of the Going Gear Beasts for all that other stuff :)

Awesome review!!
Great pics!

I like the plant pics too. And that does look like milkweed.

Thank you Lupa, glad you liked the review!

I'm glad you liked the plant pics too...I've been getting to more of those lately for their value at studying lighting and shadow...not to mention I enjoy them too.

I guess I'm just not used to noticing it this early....I have that issue with several plants....

I have the ESEE fire starter too, For me it does not work anywhere near as well as My Going Gear ones, not even close.

I was afraid it wouldn't for me either at first...then I realized how hard it was and that I needed to use the edge of my knife and apply some more pressure. Since then I have lit piles of damp fatwood tinder with just one little spark. After that, I've fallen in love with this thing :)

I tried it for a year, I will stick with the Going Gear every time, I have zero faith in the other one, to each his own. Mine is in the bottom of a tote somewhere.
