ESEE Firekit Question

Just bought my first ESEE gear - an Izula w/ scales, ESEE 4, and a firekit. The knives are really great. Love the balance, feel, and overall build quality.

However, I had a question about the firesteel - Does anyone else's look like it was mounted a bit off-center? Not that it matters for fire-building purposes, I was just curious.
Most of the other ones I saw in this thread seemed to be pretty dead straight.

I made a short (4s) video to illustrate what I'm talking about: http://youtu.be/XsMoZpw4hRw

I think they are epoxied in, so once the firesteel wears out, get it nice and warm and the epoxy might loosen up enough to pull it out and replace....

depending on the epoxy most of it will loosen up if steamed or boiled....

Does the firesteel have any wiggle room or is it solid? If it's solidly in there I woulden't worry about it.

Just curious; if you unscrew the cap and look inside, is there a screw holding the steel in the holder? At one time they were screwed in place, then they switched over to epoxy.

Nothing like being quoted to make you realize yourself and TTD have a problem, lol.

His kit is epoxied. It's not straight. I bet it still starts fires. I wouldn't worry. If you do worry.... heatgun it to remove the rod, then JB weld it back in. FIXED.

Have no idea why I have not thought about this....DUH

I know why I did

Thanks for the replies guys!

I have decided that replacing the firesteel for a longer one would be a good idea.

However, I can't seem to be able to remove it! I've tried a lighter, pliers, and even throwing it in boiling water for 10 minutes!

Nothing seems to be able to loosen it. Is a heatgun absolutely necessary?

longer isnt always better. I did it cuz i have like ten kits and I was bored (drunk) one day.

But if you want to, it just works. USE GLOVES. good thick ones. I took off the cap, and heated from inside. Took less than 5 min with pliers and a cheapass gun

When you boiled it did you pull it out and hold the handle with a glove plus use pliers to try and spin it?

If not the epoxy will set-up again.

once you brake the epoxy seal it should pop right out...

Yeah, I did. Pulled it out of the water with some tongs, and immediately dried it off and tried to pull it apart using gloves and pliers. Couldn't budge it even a tiny bit. I was a bit confused after reading all of the responses of guys who held a lighter under the base for a few seconds and were able to easily remove it

I'll try again tomorrow. Hopefully I can figure this out, lol

Try the lighter.

Thats what I use on the tip of my fising rod guides and it works, hope you have better luck....

To respond to the OP, yes mine came exactly same as yours. A bit off center and also the version which is epoxied in. Anyhow, I don't see any issue with this and like it the way it is. Never crossed my mind to heat it up to straighten it out or replace it. I will save that for when the rod will be worn out one day.. but I guess this will take some time..

A LMF army firesteel fits in the ESEE fire kit perfectly...and is an excellent steel as well..i got my old steel out with a pipe wrench :D

Why is this an issue. I do not understand?

Because the majority of the people who buy your awesome gear just collect it Jeff! You know it, i know it, the forum shows it.

If its not perfect, its no good. right? I guess thats why my knives are still covered in fatwood pitch and dirt, they are scratched up and have paint worn away all over the place, my ESEE fire kit is scratched to sh*t from being used and dropped onto rocks so i can tend to my ember i just aquired etc...

just imagine how bad it would be if your knives came with chrome finishes.. LOL

no offense OP!

Our gear is made to be used, not to be looked at. If the off center is bothering you so much then ship it back to me and I will personally inspect a new one and send you a perfectly centered one. Once you use the kit to make fire it's going to be way off center.

If it doesn't matter then why are you boiling the fire kit? Please, please just send it back to me at the below address and I will send you a brand new one after we get back from SHOT. I will use the one you send back during one of our survival courses and it will be fine.
