Esee Izula question

Hello everyone , I'm new to the forum and this is my first thread . Let me set this up for you here first .

Everyone has heard the saying "Your survival knife will be the knife you have with you when the $h_t hits the fan" . So I had been looking for some time for the ultimate solid folder till I saw the Esee Izula and thought that it could make a good EDC that would be stronger than any folder at basically a fraction of the price of a bullet proof folder. So I read up about them and read that some people liked them so much they have bought 4 or 5 to leave them in their cars and tackle or tool boxes . Well I bought one , it arrived and I was so pleased that I sent for another from the same dealer .

Now here the question . I received the second one yesterday and when I look at them side by side one is actually visibly thicker than the other . I don't have a micrometer to measure , but I will measure it at a friends place tomorrow to see how much difference there is . Has anyone else ever seen this ? Esee seems to make such high quality and well finished knives (by what I've read at least) that it seems a bit weird to me that they would be made of different stock thicknesses . Anyone have more than one and maybe have seen the same thing ?

Mike

I have seven (eight counting my Izula II), and have never noticed any noticeable variances in their thickness. Could you maybe post a picture illustrating what you are talking about?

I'm gonna hazard a guess that the difference in thickness is due to variance in the powdercoating application.

Yeah, I would second that guess as well. I wouldn't think that variances from .005 to .010" to be possible from the powder coating.

I know that mine is .162" at the handle and pommel. I dunno if I would measure on the actual blade spine itself, since it has a gradual taper.

Gotta go with hark on this one.

Rowen makes a great knife and if you feel that your knife is out of spec, contact ESEE, customer service is good to go.

No , this is WAY too much to be the powder coating . At least I hope , as it's quite a bit . I'm not unhappy with either knife , it's just that the second one is so much thicker that I noticed it right away and just found it odd . I'll measure them both tomorrow and post the thicknesses .

My guess is that it's an optical illusion. Are they the same color? I'm eager to hear the measurements.

I doubt it's an illusion, but the eye can pick up slight differences like that when you put two of the same objects right up against each other, so they may seem more exaggerated than they really are.

On the other hand let's see what his calipers say. I will say that if the difference is small enough to need a micrometer, you're just seeing things lol

I hold a machinist ticket , so I have a pretty good eye . BUT after reading more of your posts AND actually measuring the two knives , it actually IS an optical illusion . They both mearsure .162" , but even as I measured them I couldn't believe it . I now realize that it's an illusion based on the color . The first one is black and the second one is tan . What causes the illusion is that when you look down at the spine of the blades , the light color of the tan one makes it possible to see the rounded edge . That edge dissapears on the black one leaving only the flat of the spine visable , making the light colored one look much thicker . They seriously looked so different that I thought one had to be thicker lol . OK , flame away , I've got it comming LOL

It happens.

Rowen is quite a perfectionis manufacturing company. I didn't think one slipped out, but you never know. :D

:) Neat post. That's all the flame I've got.

Glad you got it figured out. Oh, and the Izula 2 is better then the Izula 1. Just saying you may have another knife to buy. ;)

I was thinking that the thicker one was the Izula-ESEE-5 Edition .

LOL too funny . Thanks for not BBQing me guys . Even now when I look at the two of them side by side , I'd SWEAR the tan one is like .025" thicker . Anyway , they are great little knives and yes I have looked at the Izula II . The reason I bought the Izula in the first place was becaise of it's lenght (and lifetime warranty) . I'm making a thin leather sheath with a clip that will fit inside my jeans pocket so I can carry an Izula the same way I would carry my folder with it's clip . This way I have an EDC that is much stronger than any folding knife (unless it costs and weights 10 times as much as the Izula .

Good purchase. I am never without my Izula. I added the scales and it really made the knife for me. Don't worry about Stoffi, he's just razzing you a bit. All bold is a little harder on the eyes but no biggie. Welcome to Bladeforums!

Yeah i love em! Ive got an izzie II which i carry a lot. the handles make it much more comfortable to use for an extended period of time.

Your post prompted me to dig out my calipers and measure both my ESEE-3 and RAT-3. I thought both were supposed to be 1/8", but there's a noticeable difference--the ESEE being thinner. The ESEE-3 steps down from 0.136" at the handle to about 0.118" at the blade's midpoint, and the RAT-3 steps down from 0.141" to 0.130" at the blade's midpoint. First time I've found something I prefer about the Ontario over ESEE...
