I suggest a ESEE 6 with serrations...it would double as a damn fine defensive tool and we all know the 6 is an awesome all around survival knife.
maybe the size is an issue? if so i would then go with an ESEE 4 with serrations...just remember, if he doesnt have time to sharpen the blade, or he uses it often, the serrations with give hime way more cutting power for things like straps,rope, gear etc.
