Just wondering if anyone out there has had their life saved by use of their knife or someone with an Esee knife, or life style change because of the knife. Explain.

Well a long while ago was out with a friend, was stranded, and I only had my benchmade gripper, which to say the least was not very effective. He had two rat cutlery knives, which put up with alot of use and abuse. Long story short? If I was by myself he wasn't there, and had only my benchmade? How would that have turned out?

I use to build bikes and cars on the side, and play video games all the time and just go to class.

I still build bikes and cars on referral however I rarely play video games, I don't really watch tv except history channel or food network, I went from 300 some pounds to 160, than even further...

I've gone camping and hiking, I explore everywhere when I can. I am in the process of building a nice small framed bike with a large gas tank, nothing but a tent, esee 5 and 3. A tent, some minor cooking items, sleeping bag, hahaha. I am debating if I should have a side car ;P looking for a good pas camera to document my ride for my fb posting, so far looking at 2 waterproof/shock resistant cameras.

I have learned that the world isn't video games, fancy clothes, and showing off flashy over priced cars....you are what you can do, be it survive on your own in the wild, or build the bikes and cars you flaunt and race.... :D

I've met and seen so many amazing people simply because of a chance situation and a knife brand changed my life oddly. lol.

Theres so much more to life than computer and tv screens, and over socializing at parties and clubs. More than trendy sub cultures like the import tuner scene or the bro hoe groups, and so on...

Esee Knives are to blame really ;) or I would still be some geeky fat guy.

I will admit I spend way too much time in front of a computer between the office and home. Getting a dog has had me outside a lot more lately, trying to wear his ass out before bed time.

We spend a lot of energy (as a culture) on wanting the next and best thing (which I am guilty of as a gun and gear nut) that we don’t often enough take a hard look at what we already have. I have more stuff than a person would ever need but yet there are still things I think I can’t live without.

Skills make the man, I agree. I don’t have much desire to play golf or show cars any more. I’d much rather spend the weekend with my wife working in the garden than being gone all weekend clubbing or at some social event. My sister and brother in law are polar opposite of that. I get razzed by friends about being an “old man” but, I just don’t have the desire for it any more. A lot of people dream about larger houses and more cars but mine is more along the line of a modest sized house away from all those people where I can enjoy the simpler things in life. Where I can drink a cup of coffee and look out the window instead of cramming as much as possible in to a day. Unfortunately “stuff” has made us worker ants. Think about looking at the world from above. In single file lines every morning to and from work until you’re dead or retired. We have to remember to make time for other stuff.

This forum and the idea of skill over gear that ESEE incorporates into their knives have recharged my desire to spend more time outside. I appreciate it and thank them for it.

It took me 40 plus years to realize what you 2 are seeing now. Life is way too short to sit at a computer or play video games. Get out in the real world and enjoy it folks. I won't go off on a spiritual rant but we have access to a fantastic world and we shouldn't waste it. You guys are on the right track-keep it up and most of all enjoy !!! Life is too short.

congrats on the lifestyle change. thats a ton of weight to lose and congrats on that as well .. whether or not you can place that change on a knife brand I dunno, but either way your situation greatly improved. you are now living life and not just living.. if you want to place that on ESEE then by god do it. keep up the postive changes.. its amazing how you can look back and see how today's society with TV's Ipods computers and etc can basically take you in and turn you into a slave.

While I am new to the ESEE threads, I love to research things; knives, camping, outdoor skills etc. and like some of you have found a bit more balance in the outdoors with a small pack, a knife and no particular plan other than to put one foot in front of the other. For me this kinda puts things into perspective again.

I will say that as a young kid, I spent a good amount of my childhood in the outdoors with my family and friends. Then came College and a job and a wonderful family. In all of that, I have been pulled back into a desire to get back outdoors and to show my kids what I did when I was young and pass along some of my knowledge.

I do admit it would be nice if my RC-4 could carry on a conversation, but the things you can do with something as basic as a sharp knife; shelter, fire, food etc. make me go hmmm.

I can also relate to your story. And it really all started when I got my first knife, I think knives are a very primal thing, and as I got into buying them (way too many of them) I started getting into bushcraft, and trying to learn as much I could about the outdoors, and self reliance in the outdoors. I have come a long way, and become a different person because of it. And RAT/ESEE cutlery has played a large part in this.

Thanks Jeff and Mike

I play WoW 50 hours a week (that's after I cutback and stopped raiding)..... I don't get what you're talking about... :)

I don't think the ESEE knives have changed me or my life. I do think Jeff, mike, and RYP and the ideas they've posted here have however. They awoke the sleeping giant from my past. As a kid I was pretty hardcore as far as being able to do anything, anywhere, anytime, with damn near nothing. I kinda lost that as I got older, and while I always tried to be prepared, It was trying not doing. Around the same time I found RAT, I started dating a girl who's trunk bag weighed about 120 pounds and put me to shame. So while I don't think it's been life changing...it's sure been re-affirming.

Congrats on the weight loss. It changes everything. I recently went fro 245 to 185 and still losing. I'm 47 ( 48 soon) and feel like I'm 30 again. As you get older outlook on life changes. I still like playing with knives and going into the bush though. That will never change.

ESEE and Randall's Adventure & Training is more of a life philosophy than gear.

OP, did you lose this weight on your own? if so what was it that broke the camels back..

A lot of your rational is one of the main reasons I no longer live in SoCal after spending my whole life there.. Just couldn't seem to break the hustle... So I'm in the country nestled in a bunker somewhere on the outskirts of Tulsa.. Basically at one with nature, process most of our food and are really trying to be self reliant.. Other than the fact I have 3 small children and still have to run a business to be part of society to survive..

you're right to MUCH time on the computer and the only video game I play is Wii mario cart online only.. And that is about an 1hr week, hardly any tv and limited video rental.

ESEE is changing the way I think about knives in general, as its line up fits more with my lifestyle.. (have i mentioned how i love the hest design?) as for changing my life that's only something God could and has intervened in..

I think a lot of it to be honest is the WWW ....now love it or hate it we look through forums like this gaining information seeing what other people are doing through their photographs and stories and think "I want to do that"
Well thats what happened to me, as kids we used to spend hours and days outside then you hit adulthood and its all about money and things.
Its not our fault its that way society has developed, you just have to pull your head up and see whats above the day to day stuff.
I used to spend all my cash on cool clothes cars and beer....still beer I guess but moderate amounts.
Now Im busting a gut to get that pair of gortex pants or looking at the steel properties of a certain blade, its all changed.
Ive redeveloped my love of the outside and learning the skills we all used to have not so long ago!
So is it a Brand? maybe but I think its more about the people who pass through your path who affect your life.

A lot of good stuff in here.
I also prefer the simpler things.
I am lucky to have a job that isnt all busy all day, we have lots of time to chat with each other and have a good time during the day. Which really contributes to a almost stress-free job.
Admitted, i like having luxury things like a good a pc to play games and my headphone setup.
However near the end of the week i love to go into the woods for a few hours to enjoy nature and the simple but o so beautiful things. A few weeks back, when trying to get a fire going with birch bark and my new nanostriker, someone that lives close by said that most people spend too little time doing basic, almost primitive things.
Couldn't do other than agree with that.
In short:
Hanging around here, seeing and reading about other peoples endeavors did motivate me more to go out and do some bushcrafting, which in turn gave me more respect for life and nature itself. Living in a growing urban environment, the urge grows by the week :)

Life has changed for my wife and I and a lot of ways, for the better. Two years ago my wife had a benign tumor in her ring finger on her right hand. She needed 4 operations over the course of the year, it was a very hard year for us as each time she was in a full cast and had no use of her right hand. So I took care of her, the house, worked and didn't sleep all that much that year.

Last summer we had unconfirmed H1N1. I say unconfirmed as the doctor thought we had it and treated it that way, but because the blood testing facilities were so backed up he didn't wait for blood work to treat us. So, we haven't really been outdoors all that much lately.

That all changed this summer when I bought us Izula's for our 6th Anniversay this summer. Since then my wife has really gotten into getting outside more, walking, fishing and wanting to go camping! She asked for a pink dozier from ka-bar and got a edc bag!

We have started working on prepping and stocking up on supplies.

Honestly, this little knife changed a lot for us. She wants a H.E.S.T for Christmas and are even talking about a trip to Thailand!

ESEE hasnt changed my life that much but it has made me get the desire to purchase better quality gear. I compare my ka-bar that i took on last deployment to the RC-5 thats with me this deployment and theres a huge difference. I was already a huge outdoor guy, i love to hunt and fish. But ESEE has pushed me to try to rough it again. Live off the land and not in a cabin.

I can relate to the weight loss accounts, partly due to the contest, which also gave a lot of good information.

Lost 40 pounds up to now, and I'm going on.
I changed my edc to some extend, and I'm generally buying better gear.

LittleSpartan-

if you have the inseam for it, you might check out the KLR650. it's a mechanically simple bike and the big IMS tank is almost 7 gals. it's one of the popular choices for riders who want to go wherever the road or trail leads. no pavement required. for more info on them check out www.klr650.net

or check out www.advrider.com for info on anything having to do with exploring the world on dirty, dusty bikes.

some people like sidecars, but they not only handle differently, but they affect where you can go. you're in Kali where lanesplitting is legal, and for me that would be a big negative point for a hack.

if i'd had a sidecar when the quake hit in '89 it would have taken me for-ev-er to get home that day, and lanesplitting saved me a bunch of time daily. before i get flamed i'll say i was one of the ones that did it responsibly, not a squid weaving all over and going way too fast.

Hmm original post didn't post all the way, was pretty long too lol. Only dizwolfs name remained. Odd...

Basb: I know right? Just reading up on here real quick kind of makes you want to try what other people have done, just by seeing or reading what they are up too huh?

Amon: Good to hear your wife and you made it through the year, health and money often lead to relationship strain coupled with stress from fatigue of working and home upkeep. Good on you for being a good man/husband. And yah my Mrs' has taking a full jump on board approach, she actually has more knives than I do, and fire arms now...

Intheshaw: Same, I already took quality to heart for things related to automotive, but when I compare a ka bar knife for all around use, utility, whatever I may throw at a knife? It doesn't stack well against my 5 either. And I wouldn't mind a cabin, I told my mrs' that, she went riding yesterday in riverside with a friend of hers, shes dead set on horses now after the move is complete. I said I want a cabin lol. But anyways stay safe man!

Luckykitty: Well that contest coupled with my wife just looking damn good in anything everything and nothing? As well other friends around who kept supporting me? It pushed me to succeed at an easier rate. p90x is NOT a sham, it works, but I followed it up with Insanity, and paired those with a bowflex, tredmill (if I didn't go out), swimming, and also food habits and diet (what I ate), my focus over the next 3 months will be muscle building now. Enrolled in a few martial arts and have been practicing with my dads head of security, he too helped me aspire. "If you loose that weight, you can get that dream of yours of serving. Don't talk about it, just do it."

Fixer: thanks for the info. And no worries on the lane splitting, I do it too, but not like the morons cutting in and out, like the kids and their speed bikes that litter so cal. I found a 92 sportster right now sitting in a womans garage whos husband passed in 95 and its just been sitting there, she knows the security guy for my dad, so he let me know, I just called, so I am ganna go pick it up. Building for me is relaxing, building for others, drives me nuts, but I plan to just explore around, and leave bike behind; maybe... Not to set yet on what I will/want to do. Stay safe though, out of everywhere I've ridden, I am most freaked by cali drivers lmao.....this is why I don't mind being loud or running HID head lamp, LED tail lights are a must, and I have a scary loud horn not those little stock ones...seen and heard. Anyways I have to get going in a little going to go see that bike and most likely take home :) have a good one guys!
