Hey all! This contains only the part of my full post in General Knife discussion that would be relative to this forum. Check it out if you wanna read the whole thing!

I've been agonizing (but enjoying doing it!) over fixed blades for quite some time now and which one to purchase. I currently own a Benchmade Rant Bowie in 440C. I've been looking to upgrade this blade or compliment it (given the overall quality of the blade and that it fits the application it was designed for and that I need, I'm leaning more toward complimenting it rather than upgrading at this time). I've done LOTS of reading but little handling other than the more common consumer brands (some SOG, some Beckers, etc...no ESEEs, no fallknivens, etc.).

My criteria is a tough/durable, well-rounded (in terms of function/application) outdoors knife for general camping and bushcraft-type use, one that can be used harder and/or for more applications than the BM Rant and that I'd take out with me if I had to grab one or the other. Initially I was much more interested in stainless steel but now I could go either way, however, I do prefer a steel that is relatively easy to sharpen and holds a nice tough edge (hopefully not mutually exclusive ha). Being that my Rant is a bowie style, I'd prefer a drop point in the next knife, but it's not crucial. As far as grind goes I'm open to anything but hollow or chisel grind. Price range is max $150.

The ESEE/RAT RC-4 has been on the list of potentials for some time...but, I now feel that dimension-wise it isn't much different than the Rant, and that maybe I'd be better off going for a bigger blade to compliment this one for now. I've also read that the handles are quite boxy and can be uncomfortable and handle is too short for some. The Izula is definitely going to be a purchase down the road to compliment it on the opposite end of the spectrum, but for now my folders will do.

HOWEVER, as of recently I've been looking into the ESEE/RAT RC-6 and it's one that has gotten me quite excited, despite it having received the least amount of research on my behalf. It seems like it can do a LOT for it's size, especially with the choil for finer work. Seems very durable and the warranty of course is excellent. My biggest questions about it are the linen micarta grips and the sheath. I always planned on going with canvas if I got micarta but that's not an option for the RC-6 and I don't have an RC-5 (nor is it in the plan for the near future) to swap the handles with. I know the sheath is molded plastic and not kydex, and that the molle locks can't be placed for horizontal carry, but I'd likely upgrade to the molle back anyways.

Summary of this post:

1.) The linen micarta handles on the RC-6...how are they?? This may be my only/biggest hesitation with this knife...are they too smooth or are they grippy enough in most applications? Can they easily be roughened up if they're too smooth? Grip is important to me. Also are the handles too boxy (personal preference, I know) as I've heard that some of the ESEE models (again, mostly RC-4) are to some people?
2.) RC-6 sheath...seems quality to me...any input on the molded plastic vs kydex? They don't seem much different to me.
3.) As you can tell I'm leaning toward the RC-6 all things considered (also looked at Fallkniven F1, S1, and Becker BK2, but the 6 seems pretty sweet!) ...handles being the biggest hesitation (grip, comfort, etc.), would you tell me to go for it or look for something else? If the latter, what would you recommend that fits my criteria?

THANKS SO MUCH TO ALL THOSE WHO REPLY!! I really do appreciate it!:thumbup:

hi and welcome.

the 6 is one of hemy favorites i've carried it the most and used it alot. the linen micarta is grippy and easy to maintain. its also easy to modify if you like, i wanted mine to look alittle different so i modded it. to me its sized perfectly and isn't blocky i wear a medium size glove.

the plastic sheath is durable and fits the knife well. the molle back and pouch really bring it up alot though, i didnt care for the molle locks or the paracord your mileage may vary. i like the drop down for the hilt with the molle back.

the steel is very rugged and easy to sharpen and although i havn't oiled it in almost a year i've had no issues with rust. but i do use it alot.

I looked at lots of knives before I bought the ESEE 6. The sheath is great and no issues with the scales at all. Lots of grip wet or dry.

Cricketdave pretty much summed it up. I love my 6, I wear a large or xlarge glove and the fit is perfect in my hand. I also have the plastic sheath and molle back. I really like this combo, because it drops the knife down and makes it easier to draw. Leaving the top handle snap undone makes the blade ride at the perfect angle to get at without impeding a pack, and you can move your knife from belt to pack if need be. You would not go wrong with the 6.

sweet...thanks for the input! cricketdave, did you use a dremel to mod the handles? that looks sweet! i've also read some ppl using sand paper to roughen up the linen micarta...anyone have thoughts on what grit to start with or experience with one that works well? i realize it depends how rough you want to go but any input on a starting point would be helpful (assuming i even wanted to do this once getting the knife).

i used a jewelers handpiece and a small sanding drum 320 grit the variable speeds on the handpiece work really well. you could use a dremmel too just watch your speed.

seems like a lot of folks who have used it are saying the same, texas...i'm pretty close to making the purchase i think...

What up guys? This is my first post here and I waned to comment on the RC-6. I looked and read all kinds of reviews and vids. I have always been interested in the tactical self preparedness. I do not necessarily live the life style but I do enjoy high quality gear and I do not want my money to be spent in vein.

This the highest quality no frills piece of equipment. I am very excited to have this piece as part of my kit. I cannot wait for the folders from ESEE and will be gifting the RC-6 to some of my closest buddy's.

Welcome to the forum BajaMedic! My time here so far has been great and I've learned a ton! I hope you get as much out of it as I have!

I am very excited to have this piece as part of my kit.

Does this mean you already own the esee/rc-6 or that you're currently waiting for yours to arrive?

Again, welcome!

I am currently an owner. I have R.A.T. RC-6 with a serrated combo. Black kydex sheath and I will soon be ordering the molle and pouch.

Cricket,
Im new to the site and wanted to get your opinion. Im having trouble deciding between the 4 and the 6. I already have quite a few small and large fixed blades but want something that can handle almost outdoor task, and esee seemed like the way to go. Any info or opinions on this would be greatky appreciated.

Thanks.

hi and welcome, i have a 4 but almost never use it, the 6 just does everything better for me. i like the extra length of the blade for battoning and it works well for skinning animals too. food prep is a breeze as well. so it pretty much does everything camping or backpacking that i need except for chopping, thats when the junglas shines.

Baja - what're your thoughts on the linen micarta handles? Cricket and others provided their input, I'm curious about yours as well, both in general and how they compare to canvas micarta if you've any experience with those, or anyone else for that matter? Thanks for all the great input everyone!!

I really like it. It's not something I have ever owned before but I really like the grip it provides. I really like how the grip works with say a Mechanix Wear glove aswell. Both wet and dry the grip is really great.

love the esee6
and have done some chopping with it no problems.
no hot spots no blisters....

Thanks for all the info, I have decided to go with 6 it just seems like the best all around fit. The knife i mainly use now is a Bowen Fixed Hunter that i always have with me. It has a 3 1/2 blade and is perfect for the smaller jobs if needed. It seems like the 6 will be a very good investment.

And by the way the handle on your 6 looks great.

Thanks Again,
Sabotage

wow, some more great input, thanks everyone. i'm very close to purchasing an esee/rc-6 thanks to all the replies i've received...also glad to see that the thread benefited someone else as well. what a great site this is. all the best everyone.
