Hey guys, i'm new to bladeforums. I have been looking at ESEE knives for some time now, I think that Jeff Randall and everyone down at ESEE is doing a great job with these knives. I don't personally own one, but I can tell why everyone loves them. Between the warranty, beauty and toughness of these knives, whats not to love? Ok im going to get to the point- Right know I can't put down $80+ on a knife, but when I do secure the funds... what should be my first ESEE?? Right now Im leaning to either the ESEE 5, 6 or Junglass. Thanks for any advice-Josh.

So you want a knife that can handle any forest/camping duties.

The 6 would be my advice, unless you like really super thick knives....then get the 5.

Thanks, guys. It seems unanimous. The only thing hindering me is the thickness of the ESEE 5 over the 6. Well that and the fact that they are over $100 haha

I'm new here too & after a bit of reading & looking around I plan on getting a 6 as my 1st Esee as the 5 is thicker & heavier. Developed by sere instructors for pilots. I've read that not many really have an issue with the 5's weight but the 6 comes with the comprehensive survival kit so that's what lead to my decision of getting the 6 1st. If not i would've opted for the 5

IZULA!!!!!

Seriously, start small and work your way up, get the kit, throw a Tram machete in the mix, and go whoop some woodland ass. Save up for the big boys, because, once you get one, you will get them all.

What do you mean 'comprehensive survival kit'? Mine only came with a Kydex sheath.

You might be talking about a version of an ESEE Survival Bag or something similar. I think the 6 just comes with a kydex sheath and the 5 comes with a kydex sheath and a metal belt attachment thing for vertical carry (that can be attached to the 6's kydex sheath).

The 5 is a bit shorter and thicker. The 6 would be a great all-around camp knife but the 5 would be a great knife if you needed to pry things open.....a sharpened prybar is what some people call it.

My first was the 5... It is amazing. You can literally do anything with it. It is heavier, but shorter than the 6. No matter waht you buy you will LOVE it!!!

Pure bushcraft, the way you would use a BRKT=RC6
Getting out of a crushed car or helicopter=RC5
Wood processing=Junglas
EDC=Izula, RC3 or MIL, RC4, take your pick
Jungle? Zombies? Scaring the neighborhood yuppie hiker?=Lite machete

 Ah the gateway knife. Don't let the size fool you, the Izula is an incredible little knife. Practicing bush craft outback, 90% of the time I grab for the Izula. Follow that with a 4 then machete or junglas you got my all star list covered.

Any of them will be very good... but what kind of knives do you have right now?
If you have any decent smaller ones; go for a bigger ESEE. Have bigger knives? Go for an Izzy!

Basically pick what you don't have to fit other tasks you can't complete in the most efficient way right now.

Just my opinion.

-edit-
If you don't have any knives than get a 3 or 4. Should work for just about anything.

I'd say go for either the Izula, or a 4. I started off with the 4 and now have an Izzy, HEST, and a 3 as well.

PS: Welcome from another resident of the beautiful PNW.
