ESEE @ Water

That's the way I look at. I was raised around cows and it was a weekly deal to have one or more in the holding lot to do some doctoring on them. Inevitably you would end up with cowshit all over you from slipping in the lot or from just plain getting shit on, sometimes it would get in your mouth, etc. NOT ONCE did I ever wind up with one of these new infections or diseases related to this type of dirty work. People get way too wound up on cleanliness and wash their hands way too much with antibacterial soaps. We are slowly building a generation of sickling wimps because they believe every damn warning label they read. Bullshit.

I spay my fence line with weed killer every other week...them watch the cows eat the grass with the weed killer on it....yet to see a cow kill over...or get sick from eating the cow...hell.. my 90 lbs german shepherd licks the poison off the grass(she's a little strange)...she's still alive and kicking...

The way I look at it. Knives are tools. Treat it like one and don't worry about it. If it gets wet. Dry it off and keep workin.

LOL!! I'm sorry Tattoo blade, but you're not fine..... I've had great luck with Blue Wonder Armadillo. Its basically wax, linseed oil, tung oil, and silicone combined. You apply it like shoe polish on metal or wood. Best part, no dust or dirt sticks to it. It does show on the coating. so if your a form over function type you might not like it.

LMAO!!! Good one!

I agree with Jeff. Extreme sterility is the easiest way to get sick real bad from a not so harsh disease. For example, children that are raised with a pet in the house (dog or cat) develop a stronger immune system than a child who was raised without a pet (generally speaking, I know it also depends on nutrition and many other factors).

I don't think it will kill you today or tomarrow but knowing how sensitive your liver is...it doesn't take much of the wrong chemical to damage it FOREVER. Also you should use soap and water and clean off your knife EVERY TIME before ANY food prep no matter what this guy says. You never know what molecule could damage your internal organs on the long haul!

Uh, ok. I just know I have lived for 47 years without doing all the super clean stuff that everyone preaches about. Recently had a CT scan done of all internal organs and vascualar system (due to my first and only case of pneumonia) and the docs say I am the picture of health. Even with all the smoking I've done over the years, etaing pounds of greasy bacon, drinking a shitload of Tequila, and never worry about making sure something is clean before I touch it or eat it. But hey, if living a sterile life works for you, then go for it.

so do you carry Germ-X with you everywhere you go ...over time the Ethyl alcohol has to affect your body in a negative way as well .... :D

If by "negative" you mean relax me after work when I have a beer and save the neighbor's barking dog from getting booted into next week, yes ethyl is bad for you.

As for your liver being super sensitive -- myth. It is the most resilient organ in the human body. It is one of the two organs, the other is skin, that regenerates itself. I am walking proof. I donated more than half of mine to a cousin years ago. I know have a full sized liver and so does my cuz.

Anything that can regenerate like a lizard's tail is pretty damn resilient in my book.

Just don't go out and drink gasoline thinking you'll be OK.

Sorry to continue my rant, but ...

We have all heard of black lung disease caused by years in the mines; COPD or emphysema caused by years of smoking or other environmental contaminants in the air; heart disease or diabetes caused by eating fatty or sugary foods.

So, why don't mechanics have some liver disease inherent to their jobs? Have you seen their hands even after they scrub the hell out of them?

Good posts. Anyone who drinks gasoline needs to be removed from the gene pool, but anyone who thinks that getting a little gasoline in your mouth is going to put you into Liver and organ failure is just plain foolish. The body is very resilient. Babying it to an extreme only serves to weaken the immune system. A little cowshit and petrol is good for you every once in a while. Sort of like the guy who has been injecting small doses of certain snakes venoms into his body over the years and built a pretty decent immunity to being bitten by some rattlesnakes (the idiot has been bitten a lot from what i hear). Now, I'm not syaing go drink gasoline or inject snake venom, but Jesus Christ getting a little motor oil on your knife then cutting up a steak with it is not going to do a damn thing to you. Man, we sure do love our myths in this world.

I ate poop as a kid. I'm still here. :)

makes you wonder why all these kids can get deathly sick from Ecoli while swimming in a Chlorinated pool, doesn't it? Like I said, I've eat my share of cowshit over the years from working cows.

OMG...my friend works in the pharmaceutical industry and verified that you are all playing with fire hear. I also asked my girlfriend who is a Doctor and she said you guys are basically putting your bodies at risk and many people react differently to petrochemicals and it varies widely by dosage. You can not generalize and say gas in the mouth will not harm you! I also said soap and water...not alcohol. Your liver can regenerate itself somewhat but if the wrong chemical gets in there it is completely destroyed forever. This is why drug companies have to not only careful about the main molecule they use for the drug but also how the fillers are processed with solvents and cleaned to surround it.

Safety is a big concern and preaching to people you will not die and you are in perfect health does not mean it could affect someone else, especially someone with a weaker immune system, or a younger person growing up.

i worked for 18 years as a butcher....now i have had blood and bonedust spray into my mouth and nose more times than i can count...never been sick from it once...i would venture that injesting a mcrib from mcdonalds does more harm to the body than a little oil on a knife....and i don't recall anyone suggesting injecting petrochemicals...

Nicely said.

I will not argue that petroleum is something that is good for you, but a light coat on a blade is no where near enough to get you sick even in the long run. And your friends in the medical field are the ones, or are keeping company with the ones, who over prescribing/promoting the use of antibiotics causing what experts are calling "super bugs," microbes adjusting and evolving to be more resilient to poisons and antibodies. Yes, by being exposed to something bad for them, the microbes are becoming stronger.

Sound familiar?
