I've convexed my 4 and an Izula with sandpaper and a mousepad with no problems at all. Lately I've just been using a stone to sharpen though and taking them back to a cantled edge.

I used a file to break the shoulders on an Izula, then finished it out on a piece of emery cloth on top of a mouse pad. It's wicked sharp. Took about 10 minutes total.
What grit did you use, Jeff?

I have a question for those that have convexed them, are using regular sandpaper that can be found at the hardware store?

I can only find 220 and 320 grit locally with 1000 grit being found at the automotive stores.

But my big question is...is the regular stuff at home depot designed for wood good enough?

Good question. Something I have been wondering myself. I am sure there will be various opinions, but I actually like that as I can try to see where some of the decision making comes from and make my own.

I use whatever paper I can find... Usually it's 3m.wet dry... Automotive paper works as well...

Yes, you want to use the wet/dry or automotive paper. I wouldn't use the normal wood-style sandpaper unless it was for an initial step to convert a V grind....that'd prob. work but only goes up to 320 or so and you need to get higher grits.

Harbor Freight has lots of grits and is pretty cheap. Any local hardware store, like Ace, should also have a decent amount of grits. If you want up to 2000 grit you may need to go to an automotive supply store....they will also have good quality, high grit sandpaper.

Convexed my Izula yesterday and it came out great!

Will likely be convexing my ESEE 3 and ESEE 4 today. :D

Snowing out today so I think I shall strip my hest convex it and patina it with grapefruit, in between turning coyote calls on the lathe. Gotta love lazy sundays.

Same way as on a stone. The softness of the mousepad is a more forgiving medium for convex grinds.
