Eskabar sheath question

The good news is that Ka-Bar has some of the best customer service I've ever had to deal with. Awhile back I sent in the sheath to my Campanion because it made the knife dull, and Ka-Bar rather quickly sent me back a free new sheath that does not dull the knife. (From what I heard on here, the old sheaths had glass fibers in their composition that would dull the knife. The new sheath does not have glass fibers.) That was just my personal experience with how super the folks at Ka-Bar are.

Now I'm wondering if there is a new and improved sheath for the Eskabar, because the sheath that came with my Eskabar dulls the knife. Has anyone else had this problem? Can I send back my Eskabar sheath and get a "glassless sheath"?

Well known issue and the only replacement is indeed a replacement with some custom sheath.

I had Azwelke here make me a great kydex one.

They did start making the sheaths without the glass but there are still some floating around that have the old G.R. Nylon sheaths. Where you bought it form could make a difference, how old their stock is, etc. It's worth an email to Ka-Bar I guess. I have one with the glass in it also which is why I have ordered some kydex from one of our wonderful sheath makers ;)

I second the Azwelke kydex solution. His sheath really is superior to the factory sheath for every application -aside from dulling your knife anyway.

I have a 2nd gen bk2 sheath. And it kinda sparkles a bit. I assume that is the glass in it. Since it does dull the edge just enough to keep it from shaving after a few draws. I didnt know they had a better sheath now?

Also. I bought a sheath from azwelke for my bk11 and it was well worth it.

New runs on the BK11 and BK14 have injection molded plastic, sans glass.

Old ones around, and I too second Azwelke. Or Godspeed, both do some amazing work.

the old glass sheaths eventually break in, and you can force the issue...

or get a nice custom sheath.

i keep a working edge on mine, it's not a shaving razor after all :>

I guess what I'll do is just retire the Eskabar for a year or two, give all the old sheaths time to get out of circulation, then contackt Ka-Bar and see if they will send me a glassless sheath for it. I don't want to spend more money on a custom sheath at this time, because I like the overall design and retention of the stock sheath; I just want one that won't dull the edge. I hand sharpen all my knives, and I'm good enough at it that people have gladly given me a few dollars after I have sharpened a knife for them, even though I've told them up front that I'll do it for free. (Just out of curiousity, if people pay you to do something, does that mean you're a professional at what you're doing? I dunno.) I'm addicted to sharpening knives. And I don't buy the "working edge" theory. A "hair-popping" sharp knife will do everything a dull knife will do, but a dull knife won't do everything that a sharp knife will do. If I'm out somewhere and need a dull knife, I'll just make it dull right quick on a rock or curb. "Working edge" means "needs to be sharpened" in my book. I never say "Wow. I wish this knife were duller." I'm sorry if I am sounding like a know-it-all smarty-pants jerk. My point is: The Eskabar (and any Becker knife, really) has the ability to be nasty sharp. I don't like that the Eskabar sheath limits its potential. Sorry for ranting. Thank you all for your time and suggestions, and I'm not being sarcastic.

take those couple of dollars people pay you and buy a good sheath. waiting a year or two doesn't do a lot.

KaBar probably won't send you a new sheath, or sell you one either, now or in two years; but who knows. they might.

you might ask if someone who's "upgraded" would send/sell your theirs.

or you could mod the sheath you have so that there are no contact surfaces.

or make a nice sheath.

and by working edge, i mean, i don't fastidiously keep sharpening the things all the time (like some people i know - i think they buy a new knife every few months because they run out of steel :>). i get some level of sharpness i find useful, and use them. eventually, when i notice they are dull, they go into the box of shame, when i get a round-to-it, i'll sharpen them up again. set and forget.

guess i just haven't noticed this edge issue.

I got a spare. Doesn't seem to dull but then again who actually uses their knives? Email me your address and ill send it to ya when I get around to it.
