As a KnifeKnut what do you see as the essential types of knives to have and what would you recommend in each category.

I suggest the following:

EDC FOLDER – Spyderco Native (plain edge)
SAK – VicNox Fisherman (guess what I like to do?)
MULTI-TOOL – Leatherman (mine is the PST1)
NECK KNIFE – Tom Krein TK1
FIXED BLADE HUNTER – Dozier K2 General Purpose Hunter
CAMP UTILITY/SURVIVAL – Dozier KS7 Wilderness Knife
DRESS FOLDER – Kershaw SS Chive

I have left off such things as kitchen and fish filleters – you can add them if you like.

If it is "essential" then my picks will be:

EDC folder - Any Strider/ Buck Strider
SAK - any model with more than 8 features
Leatherman - any model with a plier
Neck knife - don't see the need of any
Fixed blade - A Ka-Bar
Camp/Survival - same as above, so u will only need to have one knife. ;)
Dress - don't see the need, my Buck/Strider is with me always. But if it is really dressy, then I will either a) don't carry any blade/ b) a tiny SAK Classic. :)

Cheers!

Ben

I like your breakdown of categories. Mine are fairly similar...

DRESS FOLDER - Benchmade 850

Poor man's essentials:

Folder-- Opinel

Fixed-- Frosts Mora

Wilderness/utility-- Ontario machete

Multitool-- SAK

Non-frugal essentials:

Folder-- Al Mar SERE 2000

Fixed-- Chris Reeve Project 1

Wilderness/utility-- Becker BK9

Multitool-- Leatherman ST200

EDC general use: Benchmade 943 (really, any 94x knife)
Multitool - Leatherman Micra
Fixed Blade: Brusletto Liten Profilengkiv (2.5 inch blade, nice, compact knife)
Heavy-duty wilderness: home depot generic 1 lb hatchet.

I'm an urbanite, so sue me :-P

My current ideal:

EDC folder: Benchmade 940
EDC fixed: Rinaldi Enigma
EDC neck: HideAway knife
SAK: Mini Champ

Hard use folder: Large Buck/Strider Spearpoint
Hard use fixed: Swamp Rat Battle Rat
Multitool: SOG Powerlock (once I find it! :()

Dress folder: William Henry T12-BT

I am still missing a nice slipjoint...I am really lusting after a nice Ruple...:D

The essentials I have found to be the most useful are the ones that can do multiple chores, I stay away from specialized items.

Folder: The Benchmades are great, I also use a Std Lg Sebenza. Spydercos are also pretty amazing for the money.
A good multi tool: there are some great ones out there, the one I use is a Victorinox Swiss Tool. A bit chunky but it has some great features and is pretty stout.
Fixed Blade: The outdoor duty durable, usable for an incredible number of tough chores blade - Strider MT, plenty of others in the Strider line up as well.
A Benchmade Nimravus M2 is also a great knife for lighter tasks, still a very tough knife.
Neck knife: maybe not an essential item but still pretty useful. I like the ones that favor grip retention like the HideAway or La Griffe. The Hideway getting the nod as a better choice that could be used for utility as well as a mean little item in a pinch.

There is an incredible number of choices out there, many Ive never heard of. Would like to check out a Howling Rat at some point.

BM Griptilian, Vic Tinker, Lman Wave, Nealy Cave Bear, CS Bushman, go nuts on a dress folder

A solid folder with a strong lock mechanism for hard use in emergencies:
1. Persian
2. Chinook 2
3. Extrema Ratio folder
These would be carried as edc clipped in the RFP

A smaller general purpose/chores/sheeple knife

1. SAK Hiker:
This is in the LFP

A solid multi-tool:
1. SAK
This is on the belt

A stout medium fixed blade
1. Perrin black bladed bowie
This is carried almost daily since I got it at 3:00 on the belt in a drawpoint sheath by Mike Sastre and is accessed in reverse grip as a defensive straight knife.

A solid bowie with a blade at least 8 and preferrably 9-10 inches.
1. Laredo in a Southern Comfort by Mike Sastre of rivercitysheaths.com
2. bagwell Hells Belle in a Southern Comfort. This one is not carried but set up to carry it exactly like the Laredo is.

These are minimums for me to have on hand and at my disposal for immediate carry.
