Essential Knives To Have

PWork said:
The one essential knife EVERYONE should have....the Victorinox Soldier.

while I'd agree in principle, and even in sentiment -

I have to confess to not actually owning a Soldier
- yes, I do want one for my collection - but I want the hollow rivet (pre-1993?)

why don't I have one?

well essential (to me) is a corkscrew - and none of the Alox models have corkscrews - so I started with a humble economy Waiter - EDC'd with hard use for over 6 years - my first real EDC.

The 6 years of usage and experience taught me what to look for (yes, I'm a slow learner) and when I saw the Victorinox Scientist - it still took me a couple of months to decide to get one and EDC it - as I was looking for some other tool instead of the magnifying glass -

......cut a long story short - I've EDC'd the Victorinox Scientist model since Feb/1988 - my current custom version since Feb/1993 -

and I've grown into that magnifying glass - which was once a "joke" to me - but no longer a laughing matter with the onset of age and sight.......

EDC FOLDER - Microtech UDT
SAK - Pioneer
MULTI-TOOL - Leatherman PST
NECK KNIFE - Benchmade 220 fixed blade Resistor
FIXED BLADE HUNTER - I don't hunt. Wild animals should be loved, not killed.
CAMP UTILITY/SURVIVAL - Benchmade 145 Nimravus
DRESS FOLDER - Benchmade 670 Apparition

Just kidding about the hunting part. I'd go with my Cold Steel Bush Ranger in AUS-8A. :D

I find it ironic, and almost sacharin-sweet politically-correct that the "tactical" option was not included. But I suppose this thread took off due to the lack of it.

It is interesting, none-the-less. (What people here like myself carry, day-to-day)

I'm not trying to hi-jack the thread. If I cared enough, I'd start a new thread.

As a KnifeKnut what do you see as the essential types of knives to have and what would you recommend in each category.

I suggest the following:

EDC FOLDER – Spyderco Native (plain edge)
SAK – VicNox Fisherman (guess what I like to do?)
MULTI-TOOL – Leatherman (mine is the PST1)
NECK KNIFE – Tom Krein TK1
FIXED BLADE HUNTER – Dozier K2 General Purpose Hunter
CAMP UTILITY/SURVIVAL – Dozier KS7 Wilderness Knife
DRESS FOLDER – Kershaw SS Chive

I have left off such things as kitchen and fish filleters – you can add them if you like.

EDC Folder: Buck Cadet (303T)
SAK: Victorinox Soldier
Multi-tool: Leatherman Squirt
Neck Knife: n/a
Fixed Blade: n/a
Camp Utility/Survival- n/a
Dress Folder - Buck Cadet (303T)

Sorry, I love my EDC!! ;)

I'll take a slightly different approach and list the knives that I feel are essential to own if one is interested in knives.
At least one Spyderco.
A Buck lockback, 110 or 112
A Schrade slippie, a 34OT or 8OT.
Opinel #7 or 8
Benchmade 710, AFCK
Emerson CQC7
One of the Kershaw Ken Onion selection.
Gerber LST
Douk-Douk
Okapi
Swiss Army Soldier or Spartan.
This of course is the Affordable (mostly) production folder list. There are, of course the Fixed Blade List and the Custom List. ;)

EDC FOLDER – BM 806 plainedge
SAK – Don't own one.
MULTI-TOOL – There are lots of good ones out there.
NECK KNIFE – I don't know, I'm a shoulder harness man
FIXED BLADE HUNTER – Never been hunting. again
CAMP UTILITY/COMBAT/SURVIVAL – Greco Whisper C.T., or other Greco knife.
DRESS FOLDER – BM 806 plainedge. But keep in mind I wear t-shirts to the opera, so my perspective of formal dress may be a bit off.

POCKETKNIFE - Old Timer 8-OT
EDC FOLDER – Spyderco Delica
SAK – V-Nox Soldier
MULTI-TOOL – Leatherman Wave for me
NECK KNIFE – I don't like neck knives, but the Becker necker is a nice little knife.
FIXED BLADE HUNTER – Bark River Fieldsman or Gameskeeper
CAMP UTILITY/SURVIVAL – Becker 7
DRESS FOLDER - On my budget, Buck 503
NIFTY - Opinel, any size.

EDC FOLDER – Spyderco Native PE

EDC FOLDER – Spyderco Military PE in S30V
SAK – Any Victorinox model that suits your needs and is not too big.
MULTI-TOOL – Gerber with sliding pliers.
NECK KNIFE – Camillus ArcLite PE in D2 or a Spyderco Ronin PE
GENERAL UTILITY FIXED BLADE - Spyderco Temperance PE
CAMP UTILITY/SURVIVAL – Cold Steel Trailmaster or an Ontario Machete

Uh, okay. I guess you're new around here.

Most of us don't really think of "tactical" as a separate category from EDC folder or EDC fixed. If you look at the suggestions people are making, there are very few slip-joints and a whole lot of one-handed lockblades with a distinctly tactical bent.

I left the option open for people to put in other "uses" eg "tactical". I didn't include "tactical" as it means different things to different people for me it has a component of "offence" and SD - here in OZ it is illegal to carry a knife for SD so I left it off.

My Esentials-

EDC FOLDER – Benchmade 710.
MULTI-TOOL – Sog Powerlock.
NECK KNIFE – Camillus Arclight.
FIXED BLADE Small- Dozier Slim Outdoorsman.
CAMP UTILITY/SURVIVAL – Camp Tramp.
Small FOLDER – Buck Mayo.

These can usually get me through a day.

I'll never get tired of these threads! I learn about all sorts of great toys.

Okay I have to admit this is my "full" setup of stuff I frequently use at this point in my life. Sometimes due to what I have to wear or where I have to go I have to change it up. I have an EDC rotation by necessity not choice :p Odds are if I'm on my own time I'll have all this stuff on me. On company time I have to tone it down a little bit.

EDC FOLDER – I carry two. A SOG Flash II and an all steel Spyderco Endura.
SAK – Victorinox Swisschamp and a Classic
MULTI-TOOL – Gerber Multiplier
NECK KNIFE – Hideaway Straight
FIXED BLADE HUNTER – I actually use a Kasper Companion in this role believe it or not.
CAMP UTILITY/SURVIVAL – Two knives. An old Buck Special. Yes you read that right. And an old M7 bayonet.
DRESS FOLDER – Kershaw Leek
BACK POCKET- Cold Steel X2 Voyager, PE. Anza T1. I always carry something huge in a folder and/or a small fixed blade back there.

Soon to be added to the mix: I hope to switch out my Endura for a higher end Spyderco, and for EDC/Dress Folder I plan to go to the Dodo and the Cricket which are good knives that won't cause problems in the very liberal professional environment I anticipate having to work in when I change jobs in a couple months :p I'll have to have a completely separate weekday and a weekend day setup :p

Well put. I was not crying, just musing. I knew that already, I just occasionally get pissy about the infringement of our (USA) "Right to bear Arms".

It's been interesting seeing what fellow knifeknuts consider "essential" and I admit to getting a little envious looking at some of the knives that members have in their collection. I'm not an authority on the subject but here's the knives that fit the bill for me.

EDC FOLDER – Spyderco Native PE (I'd like to get a Spyderco Paramilitary PE soon)
SAK – VicNox Tinker
MULTI-TOOL – Leatherman Wave
NECK KNIFE – Don't use mine much but when I do the Becker 11 works great
FIXED BLADE HUNTER – CS Master Hunter
CAMP UTILITY/SURVIVAL – CS SRK
DRESS FOLDER – Don't need one

EDC=Almar Nomad
SAK Rucksack
Fixed blade Hunter=Fehrman Last Chance
Camp utility/Survival= Fehrman Final Judgement & again the Fehrman Last Chance ;)

The Rucksak. I could get rid of everything and be happy with that one. At least for a wile. That's a knife.

EDC = generic SAK-style folder
Multi-tool = see EDC
Other EDC = Black G10 Dodo
Other other EDC = Meerkat
Fixed blade = Benchmade 145HS Nimravus Cub
Fixed blades that don't travel that often = Ang Khola-style khukuris
