IMHO, every emergency kit should start with a bottle of good scotch.

I've found that many problems simply go away after a few glasses of good scotch. So, emergency solved.

And if that doesn't work, well you can use the scotch as disinfectant for wounds or as a fire starter.

This isn't a bad start.

Try searching "bob", "b.o.b", "bail out bag", and "break out bag" under the Wilderness and Survival Skills part of the site. Plenty of reading to do.

Clothes for the season
sturdy shoes (don't need combat boots but not sandals)
Plenty of water
sturdy knife
reliable and multiple fire source
water bottle
multi tool
LED flashlight and batteries for it
basic first aid kit
duct tape
cord/rope
money
ID
some snicker or cliff bars or some other easy food item
small am/fm radio pref. wind up
bandana or dust mask
whistle
space blanket
fleece blanket or sleeping bag for the car
extra pair of clothes in the car
small prybar
map
medication
The list goes on and I know I'm leaving things out. Read and determine what your needs are :)

A 7.8oz. bottle of red wine vinegar, a French maid's uniforn size XS, 6 packets of "Junior Mints", a Mexican trumpet, a well worn top hat, and a seasons pass to the Syracuse Opera.....should take care of any emergency situation a "bloke" might run into during a lifetime.

-Regards

Moved from Blade Discussion to Gadgets and Gear.

Thanks Chuck.

There are more serious threads on the subject in this forum and also in the Wilderness & Survival forum on this website. I don't know, maybe everybody's tired of the subject here ... or maybe the question is just too vague....

There is a huge thread in wilderness & survival on this

I will post mine however, as its quite new and I'm quite pleased with it :)

I call it my pinstripe BOB. My kit had to be portable, inconspicuous, light weight and fit into a briefcase (i.e. suitable to take when I'm wearing a pinstripe suit :)). Heres what I came up with.

bob.jpg

1 6x Large tie wraps

2 Space blanket

3 'Utility'
Pencil with 2x 3ft pieces of duck tape and
1x3ft piece of PVC electrical tape
Disposable lighter
Small AM/ FM radio with earphones
Sharpie marker
Inova X5
SAK mountaineer

4 'Tools'
Stanley MAX Steel heavy duty pliers
Shark corp 8" tempered pry bar
Also LM squirt carried on person

5 First Aid Kit
Tissues
3x Burn Treatment
2x First aid dressings
2x Sterile gauze
1x Crepe bandage
1x Triangular bandage
1x Sticking plaster strip
2x Antiseptic wipe
8x Paracetamol
16x Puritabs
1x Sewing kit
1x Steri strip
1x CPR mouth shield
1x Perry whistle
1x Pair latex gloves
1x large freezer bag (water carrier)
25ft nylon cord

6 Clothes
Light weight quick drying t shirt
Also Kevlar gloves carried on person

7 Extra strong A4 size zip top folder to keep kit in

8 Food
Cereal bars (energy)
Liquorice (v. long shelf life)

I tried to choose things based on the possible situations I could find myself in. I also focused my FAK on dealing with serious injuries, and tools on things that wouldnt let me down or break.

If I had to point out weak points in this kit it would be
1. Lack of decent shoes, especially as I typically wear dress shoes for work. I cant help this however, I just cant carry another pair of shoes when I'm meeting customers. I have included sticking plaster to patch my feet up however.
2. Limited food/ water. Again I cant help this due to size/ weight limitation. If anything were to happen I would go to the nearest (safe) shop/ vending machine and buy bottled water and food.
3. Lack of a heavy duty kife. I cant help this as I live in the UK.

Finger foods,water ,hockey tickets [a$$ wipes] ,a cowbell & pole climbers. Also a condom,boxing gloves, a pencil & sketching pad .

You'd then be prepared to furk, fight or draw !

Works for me !

Check in the Training Forum under Wilderness Survival... Too many threads to link to - you'll find the answer to any size survival kit there...

gentlemen please, while some of these posts have mentioned the need for alcohol, such as the first sharp observation about the wonders of scotch, there is only one liquor suitable for your bug out bag:

grain alcohol- aka Everclear- or Polmus Spirytus

It can be used for the following:
Accelerant
Fuel
Weapon (molotov cocktail, flamethrower)
Disinfectant
Anaesthetic
...or for that killer end of the world punch...

Survival kit contents check. In them you'll find: one forty-five caliber automatic; two boxes of ammunition; four days' concentrated emergency rations; one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills; one miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible; one hundred dollars in rubles; one hundred dollars in gold; nine packs of chewing gum; one issue of prophylactics; three lipsticks; three pair of nylon stockings. Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.

but seriously:
a cutting tool or a few
fire making tools
water cleaning means
illumination
rope/cord/wire
(emergency rations)
container, cooking vessel
means of communication/receiving information/signalling
compass
first aid stuff, drugs, disinfectant, soap
(hunting/fishing equipment)
knowledge to make use of these and manufacture other equipment/replacements

+ maintenance equipment for the above

+ a whole lot of other stuff depending on your location, how much stuff you are willing to carry/stash etc

+ backups for everything if you're really serious and backups for backups if you're anal/fanatic/waiting for the end times

+ a couple of pairs of fresh socks

I'd venture to say (though I'm sure many here would disagree with me), that between the SAK and the pliers you've got the basic contingencies covered fairly well. I don't see a need to apologize for not carrying a large and/or lockblade knife. You are abiding by the local laws, which is what we as citizens are supposed to do. That's my two cents, anyway.

I would tend to agree with you, however I would feel better with a larger stronger knife. I guess its a case of personal discipline, ensuring that the SAK is put away and the pliers/ pry bar are used if something 'heavy duty' needs to be done
