I guess it depends on what we each feel better with. I live and work in a heavily developed suburban environment. Big blades would not be welcome, especially if you were flashing it around. On the other hand, when I go for a walk in our local state park, I carry a larger lockblade.
If the task is smaller, my Spyderco Jester will do. No one ever says anything. If the task is larger, I may use my BladeTech Mouse Lite. Again, I have never gotten any negative comments. For big jobs, or day trips in the woods, I slip my Spyderco Endura into my pocket.
It's all a matter of perspective -- and of not using a machette to open your office mail while sitting at your desk.
