Essential Spydercos???

I want to get another Spyderco...I currently have a Native S30V, and have a ParaMilitary on the way. I want one more Spydie to rotate as a work EDC, and it needs to be somewhat robust as I'm a construction electrician. It will see light duty opening/cutting up boxes, stripping rubber insulation on large copper cables, as well as seeing rough duty, working in underground trenches with water and dirt. As I mentioned I have a Para on the way and it seems all the Spydies that I want seem to have the same blade and handle size's. I want the blade between 3"-3.5" long, and the grip at least 4.25"...While I'd prefer G10 scale, I do like the grippy FRN scales that Spyderco uses, so they will work as well. I've been eyeballing the Mini-Manix, but don't know if it would be any better than the ParaMilitary I'm getting. I also like the Caly 3 but I'm not sure if it will be robust enough. Anyways I'm curious as to what knives you hardcore Spyderco fans would recommend, and why it would be better suited for the workload than the Para?

TIA
Dave

You do want a Manix. It's a great knife. It's also probably the only Spyderco I would rate as a "harder worker" than the Para... at least that I can think of.

Of all my knives, the Para-Military is my top choice for a "dirty work" folder. It fits securely in the hand and the lock shrugs off dirt and other small debris pretty easily. It's also pretty tough, as you'll soon see when you get it in the mail. I love that it is super-easy to clean, too.

Pacific Salt, Dallara Drop Point would be good choices.... so would Centofante3/4 if you're righthanded.....if you want a solid knife that you can abuse "guilt-free", the Byrd Raven / Flight might work (not as much grip as FRN/G10) but the Byrd G10 Meadowlark or FRN Meadowlark might work...

the mini Manix. I owned the D'Allara, and it was a very nice knife. It had a good fit, well constructed and built like a tank. What I didn't care for was it's width, it took up a bit of pocket room, and the fact that the ball bearing area was a spot for dirt and debris to get caught up in, in the work place. The Manix definitely seem's robust enough, and also from what i've been reading the ParaMilitary will also be up for the task. Now I just have to find someone willing to trade their Mini Manix for my Grip and native...fat chance...lol

I would suggest a Byrd as well. The Byrd CaraCara in FRN or G10 makes a great work knife.
The CaraCara is a little larger than the Meadowlark. It's easy to sharpen and holds an edge pretty well.
The number one concern, no matter which blade you decide on, is the ease at which it can be cleaned/disassembled. Considering the amount of dirt it sounds like you will be collecting in and around the knife's lock.

+1 for the Centofante 4. No G10, but you can knock it around without guilt and the wharncliffe blade is arguably better for stripping cable.

PS you're gonna love the Para...

At least one poster above mentioned a Combi edged blade, for stripping most wires, the scallops on the serrations are perfect for stripping wires. YMMV but it is worth a consideration.

Hey Dave, just a consideration ... from what I can recall, the Minimanix is the same width /thickness as the D'allara DP.... or even a shade thicker....
It's definitely a Tank though....
How's about a Native3 ?

I carried my first Endura (G2) for years before sharpening it, so I have always been sold on that knife. The E4 or E4 waved are both excellent choices for EDC and I rotate between those 2 quite a lot. Very similar to that is the Pacific Salt, with H1 steel which is almost impervious to rust.

The Mini Manix is a tank and will also serve you well. The D'Allara is nice and very grippy, but it a bit wide through the handle. And surprise surprise, the Caly 3 is much more knife than it appears to be - the stainless liners give it a very tight lock-up, so you are not at any disadvantage. It's not the tank that the Mini Manix is, but it should serve your needs equally well.

There can never be one..... :)

Here's another  for the mini-Manix.

For that rough work, there's not a better Spyderco IMO.
